Box Score Wabash played in a tight ballgame for the second time in as many games on a southern swing during spring break, dropping a 2-0 contest at Piedmont Tuesday night.
The shutout loss marked the first time this season the Little Giants have been held scoreless in a game.
The loss came despite another tremendous outing by starting pitcher
Luke Holm. The reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week held the Lions to one run over seven innings. He scattered six hits and walked three batters while striking out seven. Six of his seven punchouts came in the final three innings.
Piedmont took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after the Lions put runners at first and third with no outs. Holm induced a ground ball to
Lucas Stippler, who started the double play to end any chance of a big inning and hold the Lions to a single run.
The Little Giants saw three opportunities to tie the game come up short.
Clint Scarborough opened the fourth inning with one of five base hits for Wabash, then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch with one out.
Tyler Owensby lofted a line drive to left field, but Piedmont outfielder Josh Bailey made a sliding catch to take a hit away and keep the shutout in tact.
Wabash took advantage of a pair of two-out walks in the fifth inning to load the bases before the inning ended with a ground ball.
Scarborough launched a shot toward the left-center field gap in the eighth inning, only to watch centerfielder Keith Grabowski race to the warning track and take another hit away from the Little Giants.
Christian Vukas singled in the next at bat, a hit that might well have tied the game.
Piedmont (12-3) added an insurance run in the eighth inning off reliever
Jensen Kirch. The freshman pitched one inning with three strikeouts, but the Lions took advantage of a pair of hits, two walks, and two wild pitches to score the second run of the game.
Wabash collected five hits in the game.
David Oliger,
Trey Fankhauser, and
Adam Rains joined Scarborough and Vukas with hits. The Little Giants stranded eight runners, matching the total left on base by Piedmont.
Wabash (3-4) will return to action Thursday evening at Centre College in the final road game of its spring break schedule.
