Box Score Trey Fankhauser and
David Oliger extended their batting streaks and
Clint Scarborough went 3-for-4 Wednesday in a 6-2 loss to NCAA Division I and Big East foe Butler University.
Fankhauser singled in the fifth inning to reach base in each of the 11 games in which he has played this season. Oliger drilled a one-out single through the left side of the infield in the first inning to mark his eighth consecutive game with a base hit.
Scarborough picked up singles in the second and fourth innings before slamming a triple to the wall in left-center field in the sixth.
Butler (10-13) used a four-run fourth inning to earn the eventual victory. The Bulldogs loaded the bases with singles by Nick Bartolone and Chris Marras and a walk to Marcos Calderon. Chris Maranto drove home the first run with single to left before Michael Fries drilled a two-run single down the third-base line. A sacrifice fly produced the final run of the inning.
Butler tacked on a run in the fourth on a double steal and added the final tally in the seventh with another sacrifice fly.
Wabash rallied for a run in the fifth when
Drew Biddle reached second on a two-base throwing error by the Bulldogs' third baseman.
Lucas Stippler drove Biddle home with a single up the middle for a 5-1 ballgame. The Little Giants cut the lead to four runs in the sixth when
KJ Zelenika reached on another error at third base, allowing Scarborough to score after his three-base hit.
The Little Giants produced eight hits.
Tyler Hampton and
Tanner Watson each added hits to the totals produced by Scarborough, Fankhauser, Stippler, and Oliger.
Matt Bowman took the loss in his first start of the season. He worked three innings, allowing four runs on six hits and walk with two strikeouts.
Christian Vukas pitched two innings and struck out four while giving up one run on three hits.
Jensen Kirch allowed a run on two hits and two walks with a strikeout in two innings on the mound.
Freshman
Steven Curry pitched 1-1/3 innings of shutout baseball. He walked three and struck out one.
Austin Hawn saw his first action of the season after playing basketball during the winter for Wabash. Hawn retired the only two batters he faced to finish the ballgame.
Wabash (5-7) begins North Coast Athletic Conference play Saturday. The Little Giants travel to Springfield, Ohio to play Wittenberg University.
