Wabash Splits First Day of Series At DePauw

KJ Zelenika hit his first career home run at Wabash in the Little Giants' 6-2 win at DePauw Saturday. Wabash split the Saturday doubleheader after the Tigers won game one 2-1.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Wabash split th first two games of its four-game baseball series at DePauw Saturday in Greencastle. The Little Giants fell 2-1 in game one before picking up the 6-2 game two victory.

Missed opportunities haunted Wabash (14-9, 5-1 NCAC West) in game one. After the Tigers (9-10, 5-3 NCAC West) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth with their two runs, the Little Giants responded with their lone tally in the top of the fifth. Clint Scarborough drilled a double to the center field wall, but he and Head Coach Cory Stevens — doubling as the third-base coach — miscommunicated which left Scarborough in no-man's land between second and third.

Wabash ended the sixth inning just as frustrated. The Little Giants loaded the bases with one out, but Andrew Rodgers grounded into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.

"We obviously left some guys on base," Stevens said. "I kind of played it more by the book than anything else knowing we had the heart of our order coming up with less than two outs, but we didn't convert. Credit to DePauw, but we had missed opportunities."

JT Miller took the loss despite throwing a complete game, allowing one earned run, and scattering eight hits. Jack Peck picked up the win after he pitched five innings and surrendered one run.

Two Tiger runners reached base on Little Giant miscues in the fourth inning. DePauw batters Ryan Grippo and JB McCallum capitalized on the gaffes as they each tallied a RBI.

The Little Giants cleaned up their play in game two. They gave starter Ross Hendrickson a 3-0 lead before he took the mound, and it was more than enough for the senior to earn his third victory of the season. Hendrickson completed all nine innings and allowed two runs on seven hits.

"They both threw extremely well and put us in a position to win," Stevens said about his pitchers. "They challenged hitters all day and that's what we ask of them each time out."

Wabash added to its lead in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, scoring one run each time. In the sixth, Zelenika blasted his first career home run over the left field scoreboard. DePauw plated its only runs in the seventh.

"Scoring first set the tone for the rest of the game,"  David Oliger said. "From that point on, all the pressure was on them."

The team needed the game-two response to keep its hold on top of the NCAC West division. Denison is currently sandwiched between Wabash and DePauw at 6-2.

"After the close loss in the first game, it would have been easy for our guys to pack it in but they responded to the adversity," Stevens said. "It's the first time we've had that adversity in conference play. To see them come out and put up runs right away (in game two) was impressive."

Oliger batted 4-of-5 and scored twice in the second game. Scarborough drove in half of the Little Giants' game-two runs and hit 3-of-3 with a walk. Tyler Hampton picked up Wabash's only game-one RBI.

Wabash will complete the series at DePauw Sunday afternoon. The first game is set for a noon start while game two is schedule to start at 3 p.m.
