Box Score A two-run fifth inning produced the only runs of the game in Wednesday night's 2-0 victory by Rose-Hulman over Wabash in Terre Haute.
The Little Giants were shut out for just the second time this season as three Rose pitchers combined for the three hitter.
Alan Corey earned the start on the mound for Wabash, limiting the Fightin' Engineers to one earned run on five hits. He set new career bests by pitching five innings and striking out five batters including three straight Ks in the third inning.
John Penn retired all six batters he faced, while
Austin Hawn gave up two hits without allowing a run in the eighth. He struck out one batter.
Tyler Hampton,
Justin Green, and
Lucas Stippler collected the three hits for Wabash. The Little Giants only reached second one time when Green singled with one out in the second inning and stole second base.
Rose scored its run with a single to open the fifth, followed by a sacrifice bunt to move Andrew Benitez to second. After an error put runners on the corners, Nevin Fansher singled in the hole at short to bring home the eventual game-winning run. Drew Schnitz followed with another single to add an insurance run.
Corey took the loss for the Little Giants, who rested some of their starters after playing six games over the past seven days including a hard-fought four-game North Coast Athletic Conference series at DePauw. Daniel Sutherland improved to 3-1 by earning the win for Rose (17-9) while Alec McNally picked up his ninth save of the year.
Wabash was last shut out on March 11 in a 2-0 loss at Piedmont.
The Little Giants return to action Friday, beginning a home four-game conference series against Denison University. The Big Red lead the West Division by a full game (two games up in the win column) over second-place Wabash (15-11, 6-2 NCAC West). First pitch Friday is set for noon.
