Wabash Splits Saturday Games With OWU

Clint Scarborough drove home two runs with this single to left field in the Little Giants' 5-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan. Wabash lost game one 14-8 to split the opening portion of the series.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Wabash split the first two contests of its four-game series versus Ohio Wesleyan.

The Battling Bishops pounded out 14 runs in a 14-8 game-one victory Saturday at Goodrich Ballpark before JT Miller shut OWU down in game two for a complete game shutout, 5-0.

"JT threw strikes and kept his pitch count down," Coach Cory Stevens said. "They put the ball in play and played defense behind him. We scored some runs for him today. I know he's had some outings recently where we haven't scored that many runs."

Ross Hendrickson took the game-one loss. He threw 4-1/3 innings as OWU got to him for eight hits and five earned runs.

"I think Ross never really settled in which is a rare occurance," Stevens said. "He stayed up in the zone and they took advantage of that, putting the ball in play hard. We made some errors behind him and that combination didn't work out."

Three errors damaged the Little Giants' cause in game one.

The Battling Bishops jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning before Wabash closed with a pair of runs in the second off of a Tyler Hampton sacrifice fly and KJ Zelenika RBI single. OWU added five runs in the fifth and Wabash responded with two in the bottom half from Clint Scarborough and an Ohio Wesleyan error.

The Little Giants added runs in the sixth and seventh, highlighted by Steven Curry's RBI single down the right-field line in the final frame.

Stevens handed the ball to Miller in game two and the ace delivered. The south paw threw an efficient 97 pitches, 75 for strikes. He also forced OWU batters into 17 groundouts, leading to a Wabash single-game record 20 total assists.

The Little Giant offense broke through in the bottom of the fifth when Hampton drove in Scarborough on a single to left. Scarborough followed in the sixth inning with a two-run single to left, knocking in David Oliger and Andrew Rodgers.

Wabash finished off the scoring in the eighth when Hampton drew a walk with the bases loaded and Zelenika scored Scarborough, singling through the left side.

Scarborough and Hampton led the team in run production by driving in three runs apiece. Scarborough hit 3-for-4 in each game and totaled four runs.

Stevens played with the lineup in game two, moving Scarborough up in the order.

"Rodgers had some really good swings in game one," Stevens said. "When we started the season, we had him in the three hole. Clint was swinging it well in that first game, so we thought we'd go back to Rodgers three, Scarborough four, and Owensby five.

"We've kept the bottom of our order intact. For some reason, those guys click. Zelenika, Watson, and Stippler can do a lot of things and manufacture runs."

Zelenika clicked in both games Saturday. He hit 4-of-4 in game one with a RBI and run and 2-of-4 with a RBI in game two.

Wabash (17-16, 8-6 NCAC West) fell to third place in the NCAC West standings, one game behind DePauw (9-5 NCAC West). The Tigers picked up two wins at home over Wittenberg Saturday. Should the teams tie, the Little Giants would hold the tiebreaker over DePauw. Despite the different scenarios, the Little Giants will try to keep their focus in Goodrich Ballpark Sunday.

"In the back of my head I'm thinking about an eight-hour drive back from Allegheny on Sunday coming into finals," Scarborough said. "I'm not looking forward to that if that's the case for the weekend, but at the same time, we have to take care of business here. It comes down to Sunday now so hopefully we'll come out and take care of business."

Sunday's doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan will start at 12 p.m. Senior Day recognition will begin at 11:45 a.m.
