Box Score 2 Wabash never stopped fighting Sunday in a doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan. The Battling Bishops edged out a 4-1 victory in game three of the four-game set. Wabash mounted a late rally in the final innings of game four to win 10-9.
Tyler Owensby capped the rally in the bottom of the 10th with a RBI double down the left-field line to score
Clint Scarborough.
"It would have been easy for our guys to take that game off, but they didn't," Coach Cory Stevens said. "It was a long day but they got it done."
DePauw clinched the second seed in the NCAC Crossover Series next weekend after its early Sunday win over Wittenberg paired with the Wabash (18-17, 9-7 NCAC West) loss. The Little Giants entered game four against OWU (12-21, 6-9 NCAC West) locked into the three seed, but winning pitcher
Christian Vukas and his teammates remained motivated.
"I've been put in rough situations all year so I didn't feel much pressure," Vukas said. "I wasn't playing for me, I playing for the seniors on Senior Day."
Wabash fans honored the five senior members of the team —
Trey Fankhauser,
Ross Hendrickson,
Luke Holm,
JT Miller, and
John Penn — before Sunday's first game.
Vukas entered the final game in the ninth with two on and no outs. The Battling Bishops picked up a pair runs to take a 9-6 lead. Vukas came back to record a pair of strikeout in the 10th, retiring the Bishops in order on the way to his first win of the season.
The sophomore helped his cause as well. Vukas started the game as the designated hitter and batted 2-of-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
"We know he has a lot of potential at the plate and on the mound," Stevens said. "That's why we continue to give him opportunities, and I think every time out there he show's a little bit more. Hopefully that continues."
Wabash entered the ninth inning down three runs, but a two-out rally gave it new life.
KJ Zelenika, Vukas, and pinch-hitter
David Oliger each drilled RBI singles with two outs in the frame. Scarborough started the inning with a single before
Steven Curry knocked a one-base hit to left with the Little Giants on their final out.
"The heart of our lineup started it off and it's been hitting the ball hard all year," Vukas said. "We just hadn't been finding the gaps (recently), but we finally found a couple in the late innings. One hit led to another."
The heart of the lineup stayed hot in the 10th inning. The three-hole hitter Scarborough singled to right before Owensby roped a pitch down the left-field line. Owensby hit 4-of-6 with two RBI and two runs while Scarborough went 2-for-5 at the dish with three runs.
OWU quieted Wabash bats earlier in game three. Charles Cooper threw all seven innings and picked up the win by scattering five hits and allowing one earned run to go with seven strikeouts.
"I thought our guys were putting the ball in play hard, just hitting it at people and that's baseball," Stevens said.
Josh Piercey threw 6-2/3 innings in a defeat. He allowed four earned runs; three came in the sixth inning and the Battling Bishops pushed across an additional run in the seventh.
"Piercey had that one tough inning where they scored three and we had some things happen in the field that led to that inning," Stevens said. "I wouldn't put that on Josh. I thought he had a great start for us and put us in position to win."
Piercey surrendered nine hits and struck out four.
Zelenika picked up Wabash's lone RBI in game three by blasting a double to the left-field wall which scored
Tyler Hampton.
The Little Giants will travel to Allegheny next weekend in the Crossover Series.
"We finally have momentum going to Allegheny next weekend so this game was huge," Vukas said.
Wabash will play its final home of the 2014 season Wednesday against Millikin University. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
