Box Score 2 JT Miller pitched Wabash to a 3-1 win in the opening game Saturday versus Wooster. The Scots rode an eighth-inning rally in game two for a 5-2 victory in non-league action between the two North Coast Athletic Conference programs.
Miller improved to 3-0 for season, earning his second complete game win of the year by scattering six hits over nine innings. He struck out a season-best 10 batters without allowing a walk, playing at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio two years after setting the Wabash single-game record for strikeouts with 17 in a game against Wooster. Miller went on to play summer baseball for the Chillicothe Paints in the summer of 2012.
The Little Giants took advantage of a pair of Wooster errors in the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead.
David Oliger singled with one out, then moved to second after a hit by
Andrew Rodgers.
Tyler Owensby's ground ball loaded the bases when the Scots throw to second was off target.
Tyler Hampton followed with a ground ball to third, scoring Oliger when the throw home bounced away from the Wooster catcher.
The Scots responded with their only run off Miller in the sixth, but Wabash answered right back with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Tanner Watson drew a one-out walk, stole second, then scored on a single by
Trey Fankhauser after
Lucas Stippler walked. Oliver added another single to bring Stippler home with the insurance run.
Wabash took a 1-0 lead in the second game after singles by Hampton and
Andrew Roginski. Watson drilled the first of two doubles to bring Hampton home before Roginski was thrown out trying to add another tally to the scoreboard. Wooster tied the game in fifth inning before exploding for four runs in the eighth for a 5-1 advantage.
The Little Giants picked up a final run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Watson smashed a one-out double to the wall in left-center field, moving to third when
Steven Curry singled up the middle. Fankhauser added one final hit to score Watson for the 5-2 final.
Ross Hendrickson pitched seven solid innings. He allowed only one earned run on six hits while walking one and striking out three Scots.
Jensen Kirch took the loss after giving up four runs on three hits with a walk and hit batsman. Matt Felvey improved to 3-1 with a seven-inning effort on the mound for Wooster (13-5). Wabash outhit the Scots 12-9 in the ballgame.
Wabash (10-8) and Wooster meet in the series finale Sunday at noon.
