Scarborough Walk-off Homer Gives Wabash Series Win

Clint Scarborough's two-run homer in the bottom of the 12th inning gave Wabash an 8-6 win over Wooster Sunday and a 2-1 edge in the three-game series versus the Scots.
Box Score Junior Clint Scarborough launched a two-run homer over the left field wall in the 12th inning for a walk off 8-6 Wabash win over Wooster Sunday in Chillicothe, Ohio.

The win gave the Little Giants a 2-1 overall edge in the three-game series.

Scarborough, who turns 21 years old Friday, started his birthday celebration early after Tyler Owensby singled to open the bottom of the 12th. Scarborough pushed a pair of bunts foul and took a pitch outside before connecting on a Jon Rothman (1-1) offering for his second home run of the season.

Freshman pitcher Steven Curry picked up his first victory of the season by working three scoreless innings in relief. He gave up two hits and four walks.

Wabash took a lead from the game's outset. Trey Fankhauser extended his hitting streak to 13 straight games with a single to right center. David Oliger followed with a double to the left field wall to score Fankhauser and give Wabash a 1-0 lead. After a ground out sent Oliger to third, he scored the second run of the game on a wild pitch.

Wooster tied the game in the second with a pair of runs before the Little Giants plated two more runs in the third. Oliger singled to to begin the inning, eventually scoring on a single by Scarborough to put Wabash up 3-2. Tyler Hampton smashed his ninth double of the season to score Scarborough to extend the lead to 4-2.

The Scots cut the Wabash advantage to one run in the seventh with a two-out RBI single by pinch hitter Jamie Leckner. Wabash tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. A walk to Lucas Stippler and another single by Fankhauser led to a sacrifice bunt by Oliger. Andrew Rodgers brought Stippler home with a sacrifice fly to right, then Tyler Owensby drilled a single to left to score Fankhauser.

Luke Holm left the game with a 6-3 lead after pitching seven innings. He scattered seven hits and allowed three earned runs with two walks and seven stikeouts. He appeared ready to pick up his third win of the season, but Wooster (13-6) tied the game at 6-6 in the eighth on another pinch hit single, this time from the bat of Joey Gilmore. After a bases-loaded walk brought one run home, Gilmore drove home two more with his single to right.

Wabash appeared ready to win the game in regulation when Fankhauser opened the ninth with a single and moved to second on Oliger's third hit of the game. The Scots got out of the jam by turning a double play on the next Wabash ground ball and a fielder's choice by Scarborough after Owensby was intentionally walked to provide the force out at third.

The Scots mounted a rally in the 11th with a leadoff single by Eddie Reese, but he was cut down by Hampton on a stolen base attempt to end the threat. Curry gave up a leadoff walk to begin the 12th inning, but Hampton once again ended any scoring opportunity by cutting down the runner at first on a failed sacrifice attempt that ended in a pickoff play. Wooster picked up a two-out single, but Curry struck out Gilmore to end the inning and set up Scarborough's heroics in the bottom of the inning.

The Little Giants pounded out 14 hits, including three apiece by Fankhauser and Oliger. Scarborough and Owensby each collected two hits, while Hampton, Zelenika, Watson, and Stippler each added one hit. Wooster finished with 12 hits.

Wabash improved to 11-8 with the win. The Little Giants have a busy ahead, starting with a home contest Tuesday at 4 p.m. versus Calumet College of St. Joseph. Wabash will play Anderson University Wednesday at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana Wednesday at 6 p.m. before heading to Greencastle to begin a four-game series at DePauw Saturday.
