Box Score The Wabash baseball team continued its stellar play Tuesday as the Little Giants easily handled Calumet College of St. Joseph 8-0 behind starter
Josh Piercey's six scoreless innings pitched and five strikeouts.
"The thing every pitcher has to do is get on top of hitters with strikes," Piercey said. "As long as we can stay on top as pitchers, we can set the momentum."
The Little Giants displayed no signs of a hangover after they took three-game series against Wooster last weekend. They won the rubber match of that series on a walk-off home run by
Clint Scarborough in the bottom of the twelfth.
"It says a lot that we avoided a letdown," Stevens said. "It doesn't matter who we're playing if it's a conference opponent or a NAIA school. We want our guys to come out and compete against the game first and foremost and the rest will take care of itself."
Tyler Owensby ignited the Wabash offense in the bottom of the first with a RBI single up the middle to score
Trey Fankhauser. Owensby finished 3-of-4 with 2 RBI.
A four-run third inning gave Piercey plenty of cushion. Owensby started the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left to score
Lucas Stippler. Fankhauser and
David Oliger followed by scoring two unearned runs, then
Justin Green ripped a double down the left field line to knock in
Christian Vukas. Green also finished 3-of-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI.
"I thought
Josh Piercey had a great start," Stevens said. "We played defense behind him, our hitters put the ball in play, and we put some pressure on them on the bases to make things happen."
Fankhauser made plenty happen on the base paths. The center fielder swiped three bases which tied a Wabash single-game record. Fankhauser ended the day 0-for-1, snapping his 13-game hit streak. However, his on-base streak reached 19 games as he was hit by two pitches and walked twice.
Stippler added a run in the fifth inning while
KJ Zelenika and Green pushed two more across in the sixth.
Piercey earned his third win of the season and lowered his ERA to 3.13. He would normally pitch the final game of a four-game North Coast Athletic Conference series; however last weekend's matchup versus Wooster was limited to three games.
"It was a little bit of an adjustment, but he's still going to have adequate rest this weekend against DePauw," Stevens said. "He threw strikes and challenged their hitters. A shutout is always a good thing."
The Little Giants have hit a roll and will look to continue it tomorrow evening in a neutral site game against Anderson. The game will be played at the the Grand Park facility in Westfield, Indiana with the first pitch slated for 6 p.m. Wabash returns to NCAC this weekend with a four-game series at DePauw and at DePauw.
"It's all about getting hot at the right time," Piercey said. "Last weekend, we had nothing to lose but went out there and won the series. We had already been disrespected in the conference by other teams, but we just have to go out there and play Wabash baseball."
