Wabash Baseball Season Ends In Unique Doubleheader Losses

Tyler Owensby picked up three hits and two RBI in the final game of the NCAC Crossover Series at Allegheny. The Little Giants rallied from a 6-0 deficit but lost 6-5 to bring their season to an end.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Wabash needed a lone victory Sunday but lost its final two games of the North Coast Athletic Conference Crossover Series to Allegheny in a pair of unique contests.

The Little Giants dropped a 7-0 contest to the Gators in Meadville, Pennsylvania in a game that took nearly 24 hours to play. Wabash lost the third game of the series 6-5 when a late rally proved unable to tie the contest.

Wabash trailed 2-0 Saturday afternoon in the fourth inning of game two when lightning in the area forced a stoppage in play. Storms followed, forcing the the game to be suspended until Sunday morning at 11 a.m. Due to the Saturday storms, field preparation delayed the Sunday start.

The game resumed, but only for a few minutes. A foul ball caught the home plate umpire square in the mask, giving him a possible concussion and forcing the two-man crew to adjust assignments for the remainder of the game. The injured umpire was eventually unable to continue, so an area replacement filled in for the series finale.

The Gators never skipped a beat, adding a run in the fifth and sixth innings before a three-run seventh inning put the game out of reach. Wabash was held to four hits in the game by Allegheny starter Steven Ramsdell and reliever Chase Boyer, who pitched Sunday's portion of the game after Ramsdell allowed just one hit through four innings Saturday. Boyer improved to 3-3 overall for the season.

Ross Hendrickson took the loss to move to 3-5 in an ending note to his career. The senior gave up four runs on nine hits through six innings of work. He walked two and struck out six batters. Austin Hawn surrendered three runs on three hits in two innings of relief work.

Wabash trailed early in the last game of the series when Allegheny raced out to a 6-0 lead in the fifth inning off starter Josh Piercey. The Gators plated a run in the second and two in the third before adding three more in the fifth. Piercey (4-3) gave up all six runs in five innings on the mound. He surrendered eight hits and four walks while recording five strikeouts.

The Little Giants mounted a rally in the sixth. Lucas Stippler opened the frame with a double to right, followed by another two-base hit by Trey Fankhauser to center to put runners and second and third. David Oliger walked to the load the bases, then Tyler Owensby delivered a two-run single to right center to cut the lead to 6-2. Andrew Rodgers connected on a one-out single two batters later to score Oliger and set up Tyler Hampton with another run-scoring base hit for a 6-4 game. After a wild pitch by reliever Eric Brandt, KJ Zelenika lifted a sacrifice fly score Rodgers. Wabash nearly tied the game on a single by Tanner Watson, but Hampton was called out at the plate on the throw home to end the inning and the rally.

Wabash missed on three other scoring chances late in the game. Stippler started the seventh inning with walk but a double-play ground out erased him from the bases to end that threat. Owensby reached on a leadoff single in the eighth, but a pair of strikeouts by Brandt and foul out to the catcher kept the one-run lead in tact for Allegheny.

The final opportunity for the Little Giants came in the ninth inning. Watson drew a one-out walk, but was picked off just before Stippler reached on an error by the Gators' third baseman. A final strikeout ended the game, giving Allegheny (27-12, 13-6 NCAC) the final berth in the NCAC Tourney which begins this week in Chillicothe, Ohio.

Owensby finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI for Wabash. Rodgers also collected two of the Little Giants' nine hits in the game. Starter Brandon Ellis (5-0) picked up the victory for Allegheny, allowing four runs on five hits in five innings. Brandt recorded his second save with 3-2/3 innings of two-hit baseball. He walked two and struck out three. Paul Vojtek surrendered a run on two hits in a third of an inning for the Gators.

Wabash ends its season with an overall record of 19-20 and a 10-9 mark in NCAC games.
