The Wabash soccer team's hopes for a North Coast Athletic Conference tournament berth took a serious hit Wednesday night after losing 3-1 at DePauw.
Â
The Little Giants trailed in the match 2-0 at halftime before senior
Adam Antalis scored his sixth goal of the season nearly five minutes in to the second period. Any chance of picking up a tie disappeared 20 minutes later when the Tigers (10-2-4, 5-1-2 NCAC) added an insurance goal for the final two-goal differential.
Â
Wabash (11-4-2, 3-3-2 NCAC) needed at least a tie to stay even with Denison and Oberlin in the chase for the final seed in the upcoming conference tourney. The top-four teams in the standings earn tournament berths. The loss — combined with Wednesday victories by Denison and Oberlin — dropped Wabash from fourth place to sixth in the standings. The Little Giants have 11 points and trail the two fourth-place teams by a single point. Wabash plays current league leader Kenyon College (14-1, 7-1 NCAC) Saturday at 1 p.m. in the season finale.
Â
The match versus DePauw was near even statistically. Wabash finished with 10 shots compared to 11 for the Tigers. The Little Giants put two tries on net while DePauw finished with five. Corners matched on the final sheet at 2-2, as did fouls at 12-12. The difference came on the scoreboard, starting with a goal by Alieu Musa in the 28
th minute, followed by another by Taras Tataryn three minutes later.
Â
Dayton Jennings recorded three saves in goal for Wabash.
Â
"I was really happy with the way we played in the first 25 minutes of the first half," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We were in DePauw's half of the field, we were attacking, and we had possession for most of that period of time. Then they scored two goals off set pieces, one on a throw-in and another off a corner kick. DePauw did a good job of finishing the limited chances they had and that's why they came out on top. It was a tough, physical battle, as expected.
Â
"We did not get the result we needed on the road, so now we go to Kenyon and need to win that game and wait on the results of the other conference matches."
