Wabash Overcomes "The System" for Home Hoops Win

Chaos reigned at Chadwick Court Wednesday night as the Wabash College basketball team outran Greenville College 119-94.

It was a game unlike Wabash had  seen this season. The Panthers came to Crawfordsville running their unique offense labeled as "The System," with a lot of points scored and constant defensive pressure on the opposing team. Entering Wednesday night's matchup, Greenville averaged 112.3 points per game.

Senior Daniel Purvlicis led the Little Giants with 36 points and 16 rebounds. Wabash shot 66.3 percent from the field, 40 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and  39.3 percent from the free throw line.

The first half was a strong sign for things to come for Wabash in coping with the unique style of play from its opponent. Wabash shot 64.6 percent from the field in the first half adding up to 72 points at halftime, nearly  the Little Giants' average per game this season. Wabash (5-3) also worked through its post players, Purvlicis and Marcus Kammrath, throughout the first half for 58 points in the paint.

"I saw a lot of really good things in the first half," Wabash head coach Kyle Brumett commented. "However there were also some not so good things when you look at the turnover column and the percentage from the free throw line. Those are things we have to get better at."

Missed free throws plagued the Little Giants throughout the first half and well into the second, hindering the chances of setting the record of most points scored in the game by a Wabash basketball team. The Little Giants eneded up six points shy of breaking the record of 124 against Roosevelt University in 1980.

In the second half, Wabash drove more and more to the basket, attempting and making higher percentage shots, which also translated into more fouls. The Little Giants connected on 3-16 (18 percent) from the free throw line in the second half.

"The number of turnovers was inexcusable tonight," Brummet said. "We had 21 turnovers in the second half, added to the 10 turnovers we had in the first half. Thirty-one turnovers is way too much."

Turnovers were a result of the pressure the Little Giants faced each time they inbounded the basketball. Duncan Roy, a key player against that type of pressure, was unavailable Wednesday night due to an injury that kept him out of the lineup.

Coming up huge for the Little Giants was freshman Joey Lenkey. Brumet labeled him the MVP of the night due to his hard play, care and distribution of the basketball while playing a more minutes than he was used to playing. His biggest assist of tthe night came in the first period on a behind-the-back toss falling out of bounds that found Kammrath wide open for a dunk.

While turnovers and missed free throws plagued their play on Wednesday, the Little Giants did manage to set a school record in field goals made (53), as well as fourth all time in most rebounds in a single game as a team (62).

Johnny Jager finished with 17 points for Wabash. Evan Frank scored 11. Kammrath, Trenton McCarthy, and Austin Burton tallied 10 points apiece.

Michael Hohm led Greenville (1-8) with 15 points. Kenny Greene finished with 11.

Wabash plays host to NCAC rivals the College of Wooster at Chadwick Court at 2 pm on Saturday.
