Wabash split a pair of baseball games against two top-25 teams Wednesday in thrilling fashion, winning one a walk off grand slam by
Clint Scarborough in extra innings.
Â
The Little Giants defeated 16th-ranked Marietta 15-13 on the four-run blast from Scarborough in the bottom of the 11th inning. Wabash rallied for two runs in the eighth inning against 17th-ranked Baldwin Wallace in the evening contest before the Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the bottom ninth, winning 11-10 on a walk off single.
Â
Twice in the morning contest the Little Giants tied the game with Marietta --- once at 1-1 in the first and again in the second after both teams scored three runs in each half of the inning. Marietta added three more runs in the third to take a 7-4 lead, then added another run in the top of the fourth.
David Oliger produced one of his four RBI in the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to draw Wabash to within three runs at 8-5.
Â
Trailing 10-8 entering the bottom of the ninth, Wabash would rally again.
Justin Green opened the ninth inning with a pinch-hit single to right.
Tanner Watson followed with single to left to move pinch-runner Jorden Hansen to second. A throwing error on a fielder's choice cut the Marietta lead to one before
Andrew Rodgers drilled a pitch to center to tie the game at 10-10 and send the contest into extra innings.
Â
After a scoreless tenth for both teams, Marietta appeared to take a commanding lead with a three-run 11sth. Wabash started its rally in the bottom of the inning with a walk by Watson. One-out singles by Oliger and
Andrew Rodgers loaded the bases.
Tyler Hampton brought the Little Giants to within a run with a sacrifice fly to score Watson. A walk to
Tyler Owensby reloaded the bases for Scarborough. The senior launched a shot over the left field fence for his first homer of the season.
Â
Scarborough and Oliger each finished with four RBI in the game. Stippler collected three of the Little Gaints' 18 hits.
Christian Vukas earned the win after pitching in the 11th inning.
Alan Corey started the game and pitched four innings, allowing six hits and four walks while striking out two.
Cody Cochran held the Pioneers to one run on four hits with one strike out.
Michael Herrmann allowed four hits and one run in four innings, surrendering one run and two walks with a pair of strikeouts.
Â
Wabash grabbed a 6-0 lead in the first inning of game two versus Baldwin Wallace. The Little Giants took advantage of seven walks along with a two-run single by Rodgers. The Yellow Jackets answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Wabash added a run on a sacrifice fly by
Justin Green to score Rodgers, providing a 7-4 lead.
Â
Scarborough added to that lead in the fourth when he crushed a pitch to left field for a solo home run and an 8-4 advantage. Baldwin Wallace began its rally one inning later, scoring two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth. The Yellow Jackets took the lead in the seventh with another two-run inning, moving in front 9-8.
Â
After three scoreless innings, Wabash picked up a pair of runs thanks to a pair of errors by Baldwin Wallace and a bases-clearing double by Stippler that put Wabash back in front 10-9.
Â
Wabash nearly added to its lead in the ninth inning, but an amazing play by the Yellow Jackets' shortstop, Eric Murphy, eliminated a threat with a double play on a live drive. Instead of getting an extra run or two, the Little Giants carried a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Â
This time, the opposing team would mount the final comeback. Baldwin Wallace put runners on first third when a balk was called on reliever
William Kelly, allowing the tying run to score. Another single put runners on the corner for pinch hitter Neal Dowling, who laced a single up the middle to give the Yellow Jackets the 11-10 win.
Â
Kelly took the loss after pitching two innings while scattering six hits and recording one strikeout.
Austin Hawn worked six innings, giving up seven hits and seven runs to go with two walks and four strikeouts. Fisher Henning pitched a third of an innings, giving up a hit and two walks.
Â
Rodgers, Stippler, and Scarborough each finished with two hits. Stippler produced three RBI, while Scarborough and Green were responsible for a pair of RBI each.
Â
Wabash (3-3) will be off Thursday before a Friday rematch with Marietta and a second contest versus Muskingum.
