Wabash Rallies For Friday Split in Florida

A frantic rally in the late innings produced a 10-5 victory for Wabash Friday afternoon over Muskingum. The Little Giants suffered a 23-4 loss to nationally-ranked Marietta in the first game Friday.

Wabash was held to one hit through the first seven innings versus Muskingum --- leadoff double by Clint Scarborough in the second inning. The only other base runner for the Little Giants came in the fifth when Justin Green reached on a fielding error with two outs in the inning. While the Wabash bats struggled, the Fighting Muskies put a run on the scoreboard in the first and third innings, then scored three in the sixth on an RBI double by Vayden Wood and a two-run homer off the bat off catcher Adam Madias.

The offense came to life in the eighth and ninth innings for the Little Giants. Green doubled to left center field with one out, scoring one batter later when KJ Zelenika tripled to right center. Freshman Cole Harlacher drove Zelenika home on a ground out to the right side to draw Wabash within three runs.

For the second time in three days, the Little Giants found a way to force extra innings despite trailing by three in the ninth. Lucas Stippler opened the frame by being hit by a pitch. David Oliger singled to right center ahead of a walk to Scarborough to load the bases. Senior Tyler Owensby drilled a pitch to the left centerfield wall in the next at bat, clearing the bases to force extra innings.

After awakening late to tie the game, the Wabash offense exploded in the 11th. Oliger posted his second single of the game to open the inning, then moved to second on a bloop single by Scarborough. Owensby put down a bunt to move the runners into scoring position, but was safe when the throw from the Muskingum pitcher pulled the first baseman off the bag.

Green delivered the big blow when he slammed a double down the left field line to score a pair of runs. Zelenika put down a perfect suicide squeeze in the next at bat, bringing Owensby home with the third run of the inning. Harlacher raced to second on a short fly ball that fell between three Muskingum players for a run-scoring double. Tanner Watson brought Harlacher home with the fifth run of the inning on a single through the right side.

William Kelly earned the win by pitching 4-1/3 innings of no-hit relief with two walks and three strikeouts. Christian Vukas silenced Muskingum in the bottom of the 11th inning to hold the victory for the Little Giants. He did not allow a hit, combining with Kelly to hold the Muskies without a hit over the final 5-1/3 innings. Vukas had a walk and a strikeout. Starter Cameron Glaze pitched 5-2/3 innings, scattering ten hits with five runs, a walk, and a strikeout.

Oliger, Scarborough, Green, and Zelenika each finished with two of the Little Giants 11 hits apiece. Owensby finished with three RBI, while Green, Zelenika, and Harlacher each produced two RBI.

The Little Giants fell behind early and never threatened as Marietta avenged its extra-innings 15-13 loss to Wabash Wednesday. The Pioneers scored eight runs in the first two innings before tallying six more in the both the fourth and sixth innings. Scarborough and Owensby each had two hits out of the seven total for Wabash in the game. Oliger, Owensby, and Green each picked up RBI in the game.

Josh Piercey took the loss, working 3-2/3 innings with 11 hits, four walks, and five strikeouts while allowing 10 earned runs and 14 total. Alex Dickey gave up six runs on five hits with two walks. Matt Bowman held Marietta to three runs in three innings with seven hits to go with two strikeouts.

Wabash (4-4) will finish its Florida spring break trip Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest against Farmingdale State.
