The Wabash lacrosse team dropped its North Coast Athletic Conference home opener Saturday to Kenyon. The Lords defeated the Little Giants, 25-0.
Coach
Terry Corcoran said Wabash's poor play began last week in practice.
"We didn't have a great week of practice and that's how we played," Corcoran said. "I think we have to realize this is how we practiced all week. If you practice poorly and don't make a strong effort, you pay for it on game day. You have to come out every practice giving your best effort to improve, and we didn't this week."
The Little Giants had a strong initial push.
Glenn Patterson won the opening faceoff and 10 seconds later fired the game's first shot on goal. Patterson also had the Little Giants' second shot on goal as they kept the ball in the Kenyon zone for the opening minute and a half.
After a handful of failed clearing attempts, Wabash committed a penalty at the 9:51 mark. Kenyon converted on the power just eight seconds later when Fritz Waine tallied his seventh of the season.
"We started off in the first four or five minutes playing well, then we just failed to clear the ball a couple of times," Corcoran said. "We were flying around early, taking the ball away from them, and had the first shot of the game. They just out-hustled us. They were a step ahead and getting cutters open. They just ran harder than us all over the place."
The Lords scored seven goals in the first period, nine in the second, six in the third, and three in the fourth. Kenyon also converted on three of its four power play attempts.
Attacker Robert Jacobs led all players with six goals and 10 shots.
Patterson led Wabash with five shots and went 6-for-9 at the dot.
Scott Purucker paced the teams with nine ground balls while
Zach Scarano added three shots for Wabash.
The Little Giants will return to action at DePauw Thursday for a 5 p.m. start.
