Wabash lacrosse dropped its first ever meeting against DePauw Thursday night in Greencastle, 20-4. A 12-goal second period sparked the Tigers to victory in the first varsity lacrosse game between the rival schools.
"We're beating ourselves," Coach
Terry Corcoran said. "On the defensive end, we're sliding to guys that we don't need to cover which is leaving other players open on the inside. Offensively, it's just catching and throwing the ball. The fundamentals are killing us right now."
The home team scored the first four goals before
Austin Crosley put the visitors on the board with a shorthanded goal. The freshman muscled his way through two DePauw defenders to the front of the net before firing the ball pass the goalie.
After scoring with a man down, Wabash surrendered a power play goal to the DePauw (5-5, 1-2 NCAC), which led 5-1 after the first period.
The Tigers scored first in the second period before
Zach Darabaris registered his fourth goal of the season to cut the DePauw lead to four, 6-2. The Tigers then scored 11 unanswered to blow open the game.
Lightning in the area caused a 30-minute delay at the 7:20 mark in the second period. After the delay, DePauw scored seven goals in the remaining seven minutes of the first half.
"We came out and took some really foolish penalties that were unreleasable," Corcoran said. "That played right into their hands and we left the crease open a bunch on defense."
Crosley picked up his second goal late in the third period and
Glenn Patterson capped the Little Giant scoring in the fourth off of a nice feed from Adrian Tejada.
Darabaris led Wabash with six shots while
Todd Hoogland,
Scott Purucker, and Patterson each fielded a team-high three groundballs.
Nick Woerner and Andrew Wright scored five goals for DePauw and Wright led all players with 14 shots.
Wabash (1-7 0-3 NCAC) will return to Mud Hollow Stadium Saturday for a 1 p.m. start against Hiram.Â
