Wabash lost a pair of one-run contest Sunday to open the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference baseball season. The Little Giants lost 1-0 in game one at Ohio Wesleyan before dropping a 7-6 contest in 10 innings in game two.
Â
Ohio Wesleyan (9-4, 2-0 NCAC West) scored the only run of the leadoff contest in the first inning on a one-out double followed by a single to right center field. Those were two of only four hits allowed by starting pitcher
Jensen Kirch (1-2) over six innings on the mound for Wabash. The sophomore struck out five batters and walked only two with one hit batsman in the quick-moving game that took only 1 hour, 38 minutes to play.
Â
The Little Giants collected just four hits off winning pitcher Charles Cooper (1-1) along with three walks. Four Wabash runners were caught stealing in the contest, leading to just five runners left on base for the Little Giants in the game.
Lucas Stippler,
David Oliger,
Andrew Rodgers, and
Justin Green accounted for the hits for Wabash, with Green collecting the only extra-base hit with a one-out double in the second. He was left stranded at second base in the inning.
Â
The Little Giants struck first in game two, albeit late in the contest. Rodgers drove home the first of three runs in the eighth inning with an RBI single to score Stippler.
Tyler Owensby followed with a two-run single through the left side of the infield to put Wabash up 3-0.
Â
Ohio Wesleyan answered with a six-run eighth, with all six going unearned after being aided by a pair of errors in the frame. Starter
Josh Piercey had held the Battling Bishops to four hits through the first seven innings before allowing five hits along with the two errors in the eighth. He finished the game with nine hits allowed without giving up a walk along while striking out eight batters.
Â
Wabash rallied for three runs in the ninth to force extra innings. Back-to-back walks and a fielding error loaded the bases in the ninth before a wild pitch brought the first run home. Stippler drilled a pitch up the middle to score two more runs and tie the game at 6-6.
Â
Michael Herrmann retired all three batters he faces in the ninth inning, but the Little Giants were retired in the 10
th after a two-out single by Green. A leadoff single for Ohio Wesleyan started the final rally of the day. After a balk, a single, and an intentional walk, Aaron Caputo --- who scored the only run of game one --- broke the tie in game two with a single to left for the game-winning hit.
Â
Herrmann took the loss for the first time this season, working 1-1/3 innings with three hits, a walk, and a strikeout.
Â
The Little Giants recorded ten hits in the game, led by Owensby with three and
Austin Ellingwood with two. OWU finished with 12 hits.
Â
The two teams complete the four-game series Monday in Delaware, Ohio with the first pitch of the double header scheduled for noon.
