Doubleheader Loss Spoils Senior Day Celebration

The Wabash baseball team could not produce a complete game against DePauw on Senior Day Saturday at Goodrich Ballpark. Offense failed the Little Giants in a 4-3 game one loss while the Tigers rocked the pitching in game two, 16-7.

"It's about putting everything together – scoring runs, playing solid defense, and pitching well," Coach Cory Stevens said. "Right now, it seems like one thing is clicking and one of the other two isn't so we need to do all three of those things consistently."

Before the games, Wabash recognized its 11 seniors on the baseball team. Photos from the ceremony are available here.

DePauw starter Jack Peck shut out Wabash in the first six innings of game one. The Tigers entered the final seventh inning up 4-0 before the Little Giants finally rattled the Tiger starter. Wabash scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh before Peck was able to settle down and hang on for the win.

"I thought we were impatient early in the game," Stevens said. "I thought we were trying to make too much happen with each at bat instead of staying patient with our approach and getting deep into the count."

Tyler Hampton drove in two runs on a triple, then scored on a wild pitch to pull Wabash to within one. However, Peck escaped the jam by forcing a groundout and two strikeouts. Peck allowed eight hits with three earned runs while striking out six in the complete game effort.

In game two, the Wabash offense started hot but faded late. DePauw plated two runs in the top half of the first, but the Little Giants responded with five in the bottom half. The Tigers tied the game in the third, and took the lead with a two-run fourth inning, 7-5. Each team scored one in the fifth while DePauw added two in the seventh before Wabash scored one in the eighth, 10-7. DePauw scored six runs in the ninth to blow open the game.

Andrew Rodgers and Cole Harlacher each tallied three hits in game two. Tyler Owensby led Wabash with two RBI in Saturday's final contest.

Despite the overall inexperience of the pitching staff, Stevens did not think it played much of a factor in the game two loss. Freshmen Cody Cochran and William Kelly allowed seven earned runs between them.

"Cody has thrown well all season," Stevens said. "He gave up that home run, but he came in and threw strikes and challenged hitters. William Kelly has been in big situations for us all season so I don't think those guys felt pressure. I just give credit to DePauw. It had a good approach at the plate."

The rivals regularly scheduled finale to the series Sunday has already been postponed due to predictions of thunderstorms throughout the day. The games will either be moved to Monday or Tuesday.
