A second-half goal by
Spase Dorsuleski provided all the scoring the Wabash soccer team would need in its 1-0 win Wednesday night over Rose-Hulman.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Dayton Jennings turned aside a pair of shots on goal to post the fifth shutout of the season for the team. The Little Giants (6-0) have allowed only one goal this year, a shot that found the back of the net one week earlier in a 2-1 victory over Earlham. Wabash outshot the Fightin' Engineers 10-2 in attempts on goal.
Â
"Our guys don't like giving up goals," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "They have heart. More than anything we're playing smart defensively. We're playing strong. We're doing whatever it takes by throwing any part of our body at a shot or pass to keep that ball from going into the net. It's been 50 percent tactical and 50 percent heart. "
Â
Wabash controlled the first half of the match, firing six shots on goal but had one shot hit the post and saw two more knocked away by the Rose-Hulman (4-2) defense. The Little Giants restarted play with a corner kick near the end of the 56th minute and kept control of the ball in front of the Rose goal. Dorsuleski collected a loose ball near the right post and scored his third goal of the year.
Â
The Little Giants held on in the closing minutes of the match when the Fightin' Engineers launched an all-out attack in an effort to tie the match. Jennings make a huge save in the first half and added another over the final 45 minutes to earn his third shutout of the season and 13th of his career.
Â
"Our conditioning has been really important," Keller said. "Rose-Hulman did a good job possessing the ball for parts of the game. It was back and forth in terms of the possession part of the game. We had to chase the ball a little more than we have in the past four games. But our fitness is there and the guys coming off the bench have done a great job of continuing that and have given us some depth.
Â
"Rose-Hulman is definitely one of the best teams in the region. They are usually nationally ranked, they're a team that is almost always in the NCAA tournament. They are a really good opponent. I give them credit for how they played today."
Wabash faces a short rest period, returning to action Friday afternoon at Hanover College. The Little Giants return to Mud Hollow Stadium, where they have not lost in their last 12 matches, for a Sunday afternoon contest against Mount St. Joseph University.
