Line-Drive Double Play Secures Wabash Win

A line drive to Cole Harlacher in the bottom on the ninth inning became a game-ending double play, giving Wabash a 6-5 win over the United State Merchant Marine Academy Friday morning.

The Mariners (1-3) put the potential tying run at second and game-winning run at first with one out in the ninth when reliever Cody Cochran came into the game. The sophomore threw one pitch, which was hit by Byron Campbell to Harlacher. The sophomore second baseman caught the ball and flipped it to shortstop Eric Chavez to record the double play and end the ball game.

The Little Giants had to hold on for the victory after starting with a big lead. Wabash opened the scoring with a two-run double by Taylor Canter to plate Erich Lange and KJ Zelenika. Canter added an RBI single to cap a three-run third inning to put the Little Giants up 5-0. Harlacher smashed an RBI double to right field to score Jared Wolfe after a single and stolen base to open the inning. Zelenika collected one of his four hits in the game in the next at bat to bring Harlacher home for the second run in the inning.

USMMA picked up a run in the sixth, but Wabash regained the five-run lead thanks to an RBI single by Jared Wolfe.

The Mariners rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and another in the seventh to cut the lead to one run, setting up the late inning showdown.

Starter Tyler Cooper earned his first win, working 5-2/3 innings of four-hit baseball. He gave up four runs along with four walks and struck out four. Justin Raters threw 1-1/3 innings of relief, allowing one hit, one walk, and one unearned run while striking out two. Alex Dickey also pitched 1-1/3 innings. He held USMMA to two walks to go with a strikeout and a hit batsman. He also picked off a runner at first base.

Cochran earned the one-pitch save, his first of the season.

Zelinika finished 4-of-5 from the plate with one RBI and two runs scored. Canter collected three hits and three RBI. Wolfe added a pair of hits, while David Oliger hit two doubles.

Wabash (4-7) concludes its Florida trip Saturday with a 9 a.m. contest against Rockford University.
