Wabash took both games of its home-opening baseball doubleheader versus Robert Morris-Springfield Saturday, winning 6-0 and 17-1 respectively.
Â
Jensen Kirch got the complete game win for the Little Giants in the opener, while
Michael Herrmann earned the win in the second game.
         Â
David Oliger opened the scoring in game one with an RBI double in the first inning. In the second inning, sophomore
Taylor Canter grounded into a fielder's choice to drive home sophomore
Tyler Downing to make the score 2-0 Wabash.
Â
Those few runs were more than enough to serve as insurance for Kirch as he mowed down the Robert Morris offense. The right-hander went the distance, giving up just three hits, striking out seven, and not allowing a run through the seven-inning game. Kirch moved to 2-1 with an ERA of 1.53.
Â
Other major contributors offensively during the first game for the Little Giants were Sean and
Andrew Roginski (1 RBI),
Tyler Downing, and
Eric Chavez (2 RBI) with two hits apiece. Wabash racked up six runs on 10 hits with five RBI, while also taking advantage of two Robert Morris errors.
Â
The second game served the same winning outcome for the Little Giants, however moved at a much slower pace. Herrmann got the ball for Wabash in game two and turned in an impressive outing. Allowing just four hits and one run in six innings of work, Herrmann would not need much more insurance runs from his offense.
Â
Freshman
Erich Lange was the largest contributor in the offensive onslaught of the Eagles going 4-for-5 with a double, stolen base, and hit-by-pitch. Lange started off the scoring with a single that drove home two of his six RBI on the day, quickly giving Wabash a 2-0 lead. From that point there was no looking back for the offense as they quickly poured on more runs. Wabash scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second inning, four in the fifth inning, one run in the sixth inning, two runs in the seventh inning, and five runs in the ninth inning.
Â
In total, Wabash scored 17 runs on 17 hits and took advantage of five Robert Morris errors and one balk. The victory moved Herrmann's 2016 pitching record to 2-1.
         Â
Wabash will look to extend its current four-game winning streak as the Little Giants continue their four-game weekend series against Robert Morris on Sunday at Goodrich Ballpark with the first game of the double-header starting at 12:00 pm.
