The Wabash College baseball team extended their winning streak to six games this past weekend by completing a four-game sweep of Robert Morris – Springfield Sunday afternoon. The Little Giants won Sunday's first game by a score of 5-3 before winning the second game 13-1.
Wabash found itself down early in the first game as the Eagles (0-6) struck early, jumping on starter
Bryan Roberts for three runs in the first three innings. Roberts ultimately settled in and the Little Giant offense would awaken.
David Oliger hit a long double to right field to get Wabash on the scoreboard in the fourth inning, eventually coming around to score to cut the visitor's lead to 3-2. Oliger finished 3-for-3 with two RBI in the first game.
In the fifth inning, freshmen
Jared Wolfe lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that drove in another run, which tied the game at 3-3. Oliger's second double scored
Eric Chavez, giving the Little Giants the 4-3 advantage.
Roberts finished his job on the mound, going five innings and giving up three runs on four hits with four strikeouts on the day. Sophomore
Cody Cochran entered in the sixth inning and finished the game for the Little Giants, earning his second save of the season while only allowing one hit.
Wabash found itself down early once again in the second game as the Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. In similar fashion as the first game, starter
Tyler Cooper and the Little Giant offense settled in from that point forward. This time the primary source of offense came from catcher
Erich Lange. The freshman started the scoring for the Little Giants, singling home
Cole Harlacher in the bottom half of the second inning. Wabash broke the tie later in the inning on an
Eric Chavez sacrifice fly that scored Lange from third. From that point forward, Wabash did not look back and continued to pour on runs throughout the game.
Notable offensive performances in the second game include
Tyler Downing (3-3), Oliger (2-4), and
KJ Zelenika (2-4). Oliger doubled three times in the two games, bringing his current season double count to 11.
Cooper worked five innings, giving up one run on three hits with five strikeouts.
Alex Dickey came into the game to finish the job on the mound allowing just one hit in two innings of work.
The Little Giants (9-7) are off until they begin the North Coast Athletic Conference portion of their schedule April 2-3 at Goodrich Ballpark against Ohio Wesleyan University.
