Oliger, Roberts Lead Wabash To Sweep Over Bluffton

The Wabash baseball team opened its Florida spring break trip with a doubleheader sweep of Bluffton University Monday, taking game one 10-9 in 10 innings before scoring a 1-0 win in the nightcap.

David Oliger's bases-loaded infield single provided the game-winning hit in the first contest. Bryan Roberts' dominating effort on the mound took care of game two.

Oliger started the scoring early in game one, drilling an RBI triple to centerfield to score Jared Wolfe after the freshman laced one of his three doubles. Cole Harlacher drove Oliger home with a single to left. KJ Zelenika brought Harlacher home with a double to right to put the Little Giants in front 3-0 in the first.

Bluffton (1-3) answered with a run in the second, but Wabash responded with two more runs in the second off a sacrifice fly by Oliger before Wolfe raced home on a wild pitch. A run in the third for the Beavers cut the Wabash advantage to 5-2.

Wolfe slammed his third double of the game into left center to score the first of four runs in the fourth inning as Eric Chavez came home on the hit and Sean Roginski added another run off an error by the left fielder playing the ball. Oliger brought Wolfe home on another base hit. A stolen base and an RBI single by Harlacher scored Oliger with the fourth run of the inning to provide a 9-2 lead for the Little Giants.

Bluffton took advantage of a pair of errors by the Little Giants in the sixth before adding three more in the eighth to even the score at 9-9, taking a possible win away from Wabash starter Jensen Kirch. Kirch pitched 5-1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Cody Cochran worked innings of three-hit, three-run baseball along with three walks and three strikeouts. Alex Dickey threw 2/3 of an inning of relief with three walks.

Cameron Glaze came into the game in relief of Dickey and ended any Bluffton threats for the rest of the game. Glaze pitched the final two innings, holding the Beavers to one hit while recording one strikeout to earn his first win of the season.

Oliger nearly ended the game in the ninth by opening the inning with a leadoff double but the Little Giants were unable to move him beyond second base, sending the game into extra innings.

After Glaze retired Bluffton in the top of the 10th, Tyler Downing opened the bottom half of the frame with a bunt single. Downing stole second ahead of a walk to pinch-hitter Taylor Canter. Another walk to Roginski loaded the bases with one out, but Bluffton played the infield in and got an out at the plate on a chopper to third.

Oliger stepped to the plate with bases loaded and two out, promptly drilling a hard-hit ball into the hole between third and short. The Beavers knocked the ball down but had no play any base, giving Oliger the walk-off RBI single for the victory.

Roberts threw nine innings of shutout baseball in game two, striking out a career-high 12 batters on 136 pitches. He scattered four hits and gave up only two walks. The only true threat he faced came in the fourth inning when the Beavers got a lead-off triple from Luke Hickey. Zelenika smothered a ball on a shot down the third-base line and tagged Hickey out at the start of a rundown to keep the shutout intact. Wabash avoided another possible score by the Beavers when Roginski chased down a fly ball hit to deep right center with two down after a Bluffton batter reached base on an error. Roginski's running catch ended the inning and any scoring opportunity for the Beavers.

With the score tied at 0-0, Harlacher was hit a pitch to open the sixth. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zelenika. Freshman Erich Lange laced a single to left center, allowing Harlacher to race home with lone run of the game.

Roberts stayed strong in the closing innings, striking out six batters in the final three innings to finish off the victory.
Oliger finished 5-for-9 with four RBI over the two games. Wolfe collected four hits in two games, while Harlacher, Downing, and Roginski added three hits apiece.

Wabash (3-5) returns to action at noon Tuesday with a single nine-inning game against Eastern Nazarene College.
