Late Inning Collapse Leads To Loss at Earlham

Wabash held a 12-2 lead in the sixth inning Wednesday night, only to see the win slip away in the ninth inning in a 13-12 loss at Earlham.

The host Quakers (22-8) scored 11 runs over the final three innings, including a six-run ninth, to battle back for the win.

The win overshadowed a strong three-inning start for Cameron Glaze and a five-RBI effort by Sean Roginski. Glaze limited Earlham to one hit with one walk. He struck out two of the ten batters faced.

Roginski drove home a pair of runs with a single in the second to provide a 2-0 lead for the Little Giants. David Oliger picked up an RBI single in the third to provide a 3-0 advantage.

Wabash exploded for seven runs by sending 12 batters to the plate in fifth inning. Taylor Canter started the offensive output with a run-scoring single. Oliger grounded into a double play that allowed a second run to score before the Little Giants mounted a two-out rally. Erich Lange kept the inning alive by reaching on an error at third, scoring Cole Harlacher to give Wabash a 6-0 lead. Roginski singled home two more runs to stretch the lead to 8-0. Eric Chavez added an RBI single before Canter picked up his second RBI of the inning to provide a 10-0 lead.

The Quakers tallied two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Wabash responded with two runs in the sixth off a single by Tyler Downing and a third hit from Roginski for his fifth RBI.

The Little Giants held a 12-2 lead when Earlham mounted its comeback. The Quakers scored three in the sixth before adding two more in the eighth to cut the advantage to five. With Wabash holding the lead, Earlham took advantage of five hits and three walks to cut the lead to one run with bases loaded and two outs. Drew Deitz, who came into the game hitting .133 with six hits for the season, capitalized on his third hit of the game by driving a ball through the left side to score the tying and winning runs.

Canter and Roginski both produced three of the Little Giants' 15 hits. Oliger, Harlacher, Downing, and Chavez finished with two hits apiece.

Alex Dickey took the loss (1-2), working 1/3 of an inning while giving up two runs on two hits with two walks and one strikeout. Ryan Thomas pitched 1-2/3 in relief, allowing two unearned runs on one hit with five walks and one strikeout. Cody Cochran threw 3-1/3 innings, surrendering five earned runs off of six hits and three walks. He struck out four batters. Tyler Cooper gave up four runs on three hits and one walk in a third of an inning before giving way to Dickey.

Wabash (16-12) looks to snap the three-game losing streak this weekend. The Little Giants play a key North Coast Athletic Conference West Division series at DePauw University beginning with a doubleheader at noon Saturday.
