Wabash opened a key North Coast Athletic Conference West Division four-game series at DePauw Saturday. The Little Giants lost both games of the doubleheader 5-4 in extra innings in game one and 4-1 in the second contest.
Â
Wabash trailed 2-0 in the opening game before rallying for a pair of runs in the sixth on a pair of RBI singles by the Roginski brothers.
Andrew Roginski drove home the first run with a one-out single to left to score
David Oliger with the first run of the game.
Sean Roginski tied the contest with a single through the right side to score
Cole Harlacher, but
Andrew Roginski was thrown out trying to score the go-ahead run.
Â
The Little Giants took a 4-2 lead in the next inning thanks to an RBI single from
KJ Zelenika and another run-scoring base hit by
Andrew Roginski. DePauw (16-15, 6-8) came back with a pair of runs in the seventh off starter
Jensen Kirch to tie the game and force extra innings.
Â
Wabash threatened in the eighth inning after a leadoff double by
Sean Roginski and a ground out to second sent the outfielder to third. But a short fly ball to center and a strikeout ended the threat. The Little Giant placed runners on second and third in the ninth inning when Oliger singled to center then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Zelenika was intentionally walked. The two runners moved to second and third after a passed ball, but once again Wabash failed to capitalize. A walk to
Andrew Roginski loaded the bases, but the Tigers struck out the final two Little Giant batters in the inning to remain alive. DePauw got the game-winning double in the bottom of the ninth from Lucas Italiano to score Reid Pittard for the 5-4 win.
Â
Kirch (5-2) threw all 8-2/3 innings for the Little Giants, allowing 12 hits and four earned runs with three walks while striking out four batters. Oliger led the offense with three hits, while both Roginskis tallied two hits apiece.
Â
The Little Giants took an early 1-0 lead in game two when
Sean Roginski opened the third inning with a single to right. Back-to-back singles sent him to third before he raced home on an error by DePauw's right fielder to give Wabash the lead. The Little Giants were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest, while DePauw picked up four runs in the bottom of the sixth off starter
Michael Herrmann (2-3) to complete the Saturday sweep.
Â
Herrmann worked six innings, giving up eight hits and four earned runs. He also walked four batters and recorded four strikeouts. The Little Giants were held to four hits in the game, coming from
Jared Wolfe,
Taylor Canter, Zelenika, and Roginski.
Â
Wabash (16-14, 6-4) moved into a tie for second place in the West Division standings with Ohio Wesleyan (6-4 NCAC West) after the Battling Bishops took two games from divisional leader Denison (8-2 NCAC West). DePauw sits two games behind overall in third place.
Â
Wabash and DePauw conclude the series Sunday with two more games beginning at noon at Walker Field.
