Lead Slips Away in One-Run Loss to North Central

Box Score The Wabash College baseball team battled through the cold weather at Standard Bank Ballpark but came up short in their effort Tuesday night against 15th-ranked North Central Cardinals, losing 9-8.
 
The Little Giants strung together timely hits and took advantage of North Central errors to put seven runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Senior David Oliger started the scoring parade with a single to right field that drove in Jared Wolfe. Sean Roginski continued the offensive output with a single that extended the Little Giant lead to 5-0. Sophomore Taylor Canter rounded out the first inning scoring effort when he reached on an error that brought home Roginski.
 
Wabash was stymied for the majority of the game following a North Central pitching change with two outs in the first inning. The Little Giants collected just five hits over the next seven innings.
 
The Cardinals (24-5) slowly chipped their way back into the ballgame. North Central scratched across four runs in the bottom of the first, two runs in the fifth, drove in the tying run in the sixth, and finally broke through with the go-ahead eighth run in the eighth inning.
 
Facing an 8-7 deficit in the top of the ninth inning, Andrew Roginski singled home pinch runner Nick Chao after KJ Zelenika led off the inning with a double to left. Chao's run brought the Little Giants even with North Central, but the team was unable to recapture the lead. again in the inning. With two outs in the home-half of the ninth inning, Sing Fong of North Central walked-off on a throwing error by the Little Giants, which gave North Central the 9-8 victory.
 
Sean Roginski finished with a 2-for-4 effort with one RBI. Zack Leander chipped in two RBI and Oliger and Andrew Roginski each had one RBI. Three of the Little Giants' runs were unearned.
 
Senior Christian Vukas started the game on the mound for the Little Giants, throwing one inning while allowing three earned runs on four hits. Luke Dant threw three innings of relief, holding the Cardinals scoreless on three hits and two walks. He struck out one batter. Alex Dickey gave up three runs and one walk with five hits in two innings of work. He also struck out one Cardinals' player. Tyler Cooper (2-3) finished the final 2-2/3 innings, surrendering one earned run on four hits with two walks. He struck out one batter.
 
Wabash (16-17) looks to snap its eight-game losing streak this coming weekend in a pivotal North Coast Athletic Conference West Division matchup against Denison University at Goodrich Ballpark. First pitch Saturday is set for noon.
