The Wabash soccer team scored twice in the first half and answered an Anderson goal in the second to secure a 3-1 win Wednesday night.
Â
The Little Giants tallied a goal by
Geno James in the 22
nd minute to take an early lead on solid passes from
Nikola Kajmakoski and
Francisco Trejo. The play began when
Mike Gore chased down a ball that squirted away from an Anderson (5-2-0) defender. Gore reset the offense with a pass to Kajmakoski, who delivered to Trejo in the left corner. Trejo passed the ball through the box to James, set up off the right post, for the easy goal.
Â
Alexiz Arellano and
Gabriel Anguiano provided the passes that led to a second goal by
Cory Sims. The two players looked for openings on the right side of the box, then found Sims just inside the left post for his second goal of the season.
Â
"We knew Anderson is a good side with a very good record entering the game," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We knew if we jumped on them early at home it could be a good day. We got a goal early, then got the subs to come in off the bench and give us another boost and score the second goal. It was a very good start to the first half."
Â
Wabash fired seven total shots in the first half with four on goal. The offensive attack picked up in the final period, starting with the first 15 minutes. The Little Giant nearly added a third goal in the first 38 seconds of the second half as part of a 15-shot effort.
Â
Anderson rallied for a goal in the 58
th minute to trim the lead to one. Wabash responded with goal on a set piece in the 70
th minute. Trejo launched a corner kick to the near post that
Spase Dorsuleski drilled in the net with a header for a 3-1 Wabash advantage.
Â
Goalkeeper
Dayton Jennings made a pair of late saves to preserve the two-goal win. He finished the day with three total saves and faced 12 total shots by the Ravens.
Â
"It was huge to get that third goal," Keller said. "We played some of the best soccer I've seen from this team in the first 15-to-20 minutes of the second half. Unfortunately we had three or four chances that we just couldn't put away. That would have sealed the game. We let Anderson hang around, and like any good team if you do that they will find a way to score. I was proud of the way we fought back to get a goal back and restore the two-goal lead."
Â
The Little Giants placed 11 shots on goal in the match, led by
Max Rowley and
Bayden Lee with two apiece.
Â
Wabash (4-3-1) opens the North Coast Athletic Conference portion of the season Saturday with a 1 p.m. match at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
