Wabash Offense Stymied By OWU in 16-13 Home Loss

Wabash was outgained 375 yards to 339 yards by Ohio Wesleyan University, losing 16-13 to the visiting Battling Bishops for the first time since the Little Giants joined the North Coast Athletic Conference.

The Little Giants, ranked 20th in the D3football.com poll and 18th by the American Football Coaches Association, could not find the end zone with the exception of the Schuyler Nehrig recovery of a blocked field goal attempt the sophomore returned for a 24-yard score in the third quarter to tie the game at 13-13.

Nehrig accounted for all 13 points for Wabash, connecting on two of four field goal attempts. He hit a 43-yard attempt in the first quarter to give the Little Giants a 3-0 lead. Nehrig added a 26-yard field goal in the third quarter to cut the OWU (3-3, 3-2 NCAC) lead to 10-6. The Battling Bishops scored the only traditional touchdown of the game with 13:31 left in the second period on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Brian Berry to Hunter Baker to provide a 7-3 lead. Anthony Sanfillipo tacked on a 30-yard field goal before halftime.

Sanfillipo kicked a 29-yard field goal in the third period to stretch OWU's advantage to 13-6. Nehrig attempted a 41-yard field goal try with 5:20 left to play in the period, but the kick was blocked by Kyle Hogan. Nehrig scooped up the live ball behind the line of scrimmage and raced for the end zone, scoring on the 24-yard rush. He added the extra-point kick to even the score with 5:16 remaining in the third.

Sanfillipo kicked the game-winning field goal from 20 yards away with 3:46 left to play in the contest. The Little Giants had one final opportunity to try and either tie or win the game. Wabash marched 50 yards to the OWU 25, but a sack by Brad Brodek and Cody Streit backed the Little Giants up five yards. An incomplete pass put Nehrig back on the field to try and tie the game with a 47-yard attempt. His kick sailed wide to the left, but a roughing the kicker penalty on Natrone Barnes gave Wabash another chance with a fresh set of downs. The Little Giants moved the ball to the five yardline, but another sack by Ohio Wesleyan's Anthony Chambers backed Wabash up to the 15. Nehrig came out once again for a 32-yard try, but Hogan blocked it once again as time ran out to give OWU the win.

The Little Giants were harassed by the defensive front of OWU all game long, surrendering three sacks for 20 yards. The visitors limited Wabash's running game to 149 yards for the game not including Nehrig's 24 yard run. Ike James finished with 24 carries for 87 yards. Isaac Avant rushed for 55 yards over 14 tries. Weston Murphy threw for 166 yards on 13-of-32 passing with one interception. Ra'shawn Jones and Dylan Buresh each caught four passes. Jones finished with a career-high 85 receiving yards.

Berry threw for 284 yards and the one touchdown, completing 25 of 51 attempts. Deji Adebiyi caught eight passes for 98 yards. Baker finished with five receptions for 85 yards and the touchdown catch. Curtis Duren rushed for 53 yards in eight attempts.

Evan Hansen paced the Wabash defense with 14 tackles, including 11 solo stops and a forced fumble. Byshup Rhodes added eight tackles. Henry Webberhunt made six tackles and forced a fumble that was recovered by Klay Fullenkamp.

The loss dropped Wabash (5-1, 4-1 NCAC) from the ranks of the unbeaten among NCAC teams and into third place in the conference standings. The Little Giants travel to Oberlin next Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest against the Yeomen, who lost to Wooster 38-28.
