A goal in the 21st minute of Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference soccer match lifted Oberlin College past Wabash 1-0.
Â
The Little Giants outshot Oberlin (7-7-2, 3-4 NCAC) 16 to 14 and held a 7-to-6 edge in shots on goal. The Yeomen scored the only goal of the contest on a shot by Jack McMilin for his ninth goal of the year off a pass into the box by Jesse Lauritsen.
Â
Mike Gore and
Abdoulie Waggeh each fired three shots to pace the Little Giants' offensive effort. Waggeh finished with two of Wabash's seven shots on goal.
Â
Demitri Lee produced five saves in goal for Wabash.
Â
"This was a tough loss on the road against a good opponent," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We created the most opportunities we've had all year. We had five breakaway chances with one-versus-one shots against Oberlin's goalkeeper and failed to make any of the shots. Credit their goalkeeper with some good saves, but our lack of finishing the play really did us in at the end. When you get five chances with no defenders between you and the goalkeeper you have to put those shots away. If we could have done that it would have carried the day. But we didn't execute in the final third of the field, and we're disappointed with that."
Â
Wabash (9-5-1, 3-3-1) sits in fourth place in the NCAC standings with ten total points and two games remaining on the regular season schedule. Kenyon is in the top spot and has locked up one of the four conference tournament berths with 21 points. Ohio Wesleyan is second with 16 points followed by Denison in third place with 12 points. DePauw, Oberlin, and Hiram are tied for fifth place one point back of Wabash with nine points. The top-four teams in the final standings advance to the NCAC tournament.
Â
"We control our own destiny," Keller said. "We have to focus on getting the last six points available to us in this week's games at DePauw and at home against Wooster next Saturday."
Â
Wabash will travel to DePauw Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest.
