Wabash clinched its third North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament berth in four years with a 2-1 victory over archrival DePauw University Wednesday night in Greencastle, Indiana.
Â
The Little Giants (10-5-1, 4-2-1) earned, their second consecutive victory over DePauw (5-6-4, 2-3-3 NCAC) and the first win in Greencastle since 1999. The victory gives Wabash 13 total points in the NCAC standings to put the team in fourth place, trailing Denison in third with 15 points. The Little Giants can earn three more points on Saturday with a win at home over the College of Wooster. Denison closes out the regular season Saturday evening at home against second-place Ohio Wesleyan.
Â
Cory Sims netted the game-winning goal in the 80th minute off passes from
Stojan Krsteski and
Alexiz Arellano.
Spase Dorsuleski picked up his first goal of the season on a header in the 22nd minute of the match to provide a 1-0 lead for Wabash. The Little Giants maintained the advantage through halftime until Keaton Voegerl evened the match with his first goal of the season in the 75th minute.
Â
"It was a fantastic way to finish the game, a fantastic way to play the game," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We played very well. I'm just so proud of the guys and the way they fought all night. DePauw scored a goal that was kind of a lucky deflection that bounced right to their player. We could have hung our heads, but instead we came right back with a goal of our own. Our young guys played really well in a such a big, important match and the senior really pushed us through to the victory."
Â
Wabash dominated the offensive numbers, outshooting DePauw 10-6 with five shots on goal compared to just the one shot on goal by Voegerl.
Demitri Lee earned his sixth win of the season at goalkeeper for Wabash.
Â
"This was such a great game for our defensive line," Keller added. "It felt great to be able to withstand the pressure DePauw presented. Most importantly we want to thank all of the Wabash students and fans that came out. We had about four times as many fans as DePauw. It really showed our sense of community and the support and passion they have for our program. We couldn't have won this game without the fans. It was a special moment.
Â
"It was also special to be able to knock DePauw out of a possible spot in the conference tournament. We know we're one of the four teams to be playing next week and we've worked hard to earn the right to play in the tournament."
Â
The Little Giants will celebrate the senior members of the soccer team Saturday prior to the start of the noon match versus Wooster. Wabash will travel either to regular season NCAC champion Kenyon or to Ohio Wesleyan next Wednesday.
