Wabash College freshman guard
Jack Davidson notched a double-double with 35 points and 11 rebounds in the Little Giants' 82-69 win over Earlham Monday evening.
Davidson connected on 11-of-16 shots from the field, including five of his six three-point shots, and finished 8-of-9 from the free throw line. He scored the most points by a freshman since teammate
Colten Garland tallied 37 against DePauw last January. Davidson nearly earned a triple double, finishing the game with six assists.
Wabash (1-2) took an early lead, 11-2, before the visiting Quakers (1-3) battled back to tie the score at 18-18. Earlham moved in front 28-26 and again at 30-29 before free throws by Davidson and
Harrison Hallstrom gave Wabash the lead once again. The Little Giants led 35-34 at halftime, then started the second half on an 18-3 scoring run over the first five minutes of the period.
The Little Giants maintained the double-digit advantage throughout most of the final period. Earlham drew as close as eight points with 2:25 left in the game, but a jumper in the lane by Davidson made the score 77-67. Jamel Barnes answered with a fast-break drive for one final basket for the Quaker. Wabash hit five free throws over the final 1:26 for the win.
Connor Rotterman scored 15 points and handed out four assists in his first appearance in the Wabash lineup after missing the two games in St. Louis due to an injury. Hallstrom scored 16 points and snared nine rebounds. Chainey Zolman led the Quakers with 16 points. Elijah Wilson-Thomas scored 11 points. Barnes finished with 10 points.
"We're young," Wabash head coach
Kyle Brumett said. "We're young and crazy. We're dealing with some injuries. We had to throw some young guys into the fire tonight. I thought for the most part they did a pretty good job. Davidson and Rotterman are both really good players. They played at a high level in high school. They've still got to settle and learn what college basketball is like. It's tough, but it's also not like it is the first time they've been in hostile or tough situations.
"We had one turnover in our first ten possessions tonight, but finished with 12 turnovers in the first half. We had four turnovers in our next six possessions after that fast start that let Earlham right back into the game. After that it was a grind. We caught our breath at halftime and figured a few things out. Early in the second half they did a really good job of executing what I was asking them to do at halftime. That's when we were able to stretch the lead."
Wabash opens North Coast Athletic play this coming Saturday when the Little Giants travel to the College of Wooster to take on the Fighting Scots at 2Â p.m.
