Wabash remained undefeated on the road in North Coast Athletic Conference games with a 70-57 win at Kenyon Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Little Giants (3-3, 2-1 NCAC) led by as many as 17 points in the second half but had to hold off a hard-charging Lords squad in the closing minutes.
Â
With Wabash holding a 61-46 lead with 4:44 left to play in the game, Kenyon (4-3, 1-2 NCAC) went on a 7-0 run over the next 1:20 to trim the lead to eight points.
Rhett Helt ended the scoring run with a pair of free throws to once again provide a double-digit lead. Kenyon rallied for another run to draw as close as 63-57 in the final 1:17 of the game. A pair of free throws from
Jack Davidson and a layup by
Harrison Hallstrom to break the Kenyon press made the lead ten points once again. Hallstrom and
Connor Rotterman closed out the game at the free throw line in the final 40 seconds of the contest.
Â
"This is a very good win for our team," Wabash head coach
Kyle Brumett said. "Winning in the NCAC is hard to do, winning on the road is special. I am really proud of the win. We are getting to the free throw line and converting at a very high rate. We must value the ball more, but defending, rebounding and making your free throws gives us a chance gain experience while having a chance to win important games.
Â
"We made some strides offensively at different points in the games. The first half was a good step for us, only turning the ball over 3 times gave us a chance to build the lead. Rotterman, Davidson, and
Alex Eberhard all had space to drive and had plays that built the lead. The second half was a typical NCAC game. Kenyon made adjustments and we were careless with the ball. Kenyon's defense kept the within striking distance. They took it off of us too many times. We were able to go inside to Harry, and make free throws to close the game out."
Â
The Little Giants limited Kenyon to four baskets inside the three-point arc in the first half. The Lords shot 10-of-30 from the field overall in the first half, with 6-of-17 attempts from three-point range with only four points coming inside the paint. Wabash finished the first half 13-of-30 from the field and 6-of-11 from long range to take a 40-28 lead at the break, scoring 12 points in the paint while using its driving penetration to set up outside shots.
Â
The Little Giants cooled to 21-of-51 for the game and made only one three-point try out of five attempts in the final 20 minutes. Davidson and Hallstrom shared scoring honors for Wabash with 16 points apiece. Rotterman added 13 points, while Eberhard added 10 points. Carter Powell led the Lords with 12 points. Matt Shifrin scored 11 points for Kenyon.
Â
Wabash dominated the boards, outrebounding Kenyon 45-29. The Little Giants grabbed nine offensive boards that led to 12 second-chance points. Hallstrom and
Logan White each snared eight rebounds, with White finishing with four offensive boards. Helt added six rebounds and nine points off the bench.
Â
"I'm very proud of our defensive effort today." Brumett said. "We had contributions all across the board. Kenyon is an older team with very good size. Eberhard and Hallstrom played extremely well and White and Vachon gave us defense and rebounding that we will need to continue to have success in our league."Â
Â
The Little Giants return to action with a pair of back-to-back conference games next weekend, beginning with a game at Hiram Saturday, December 16 at 2 p.m. before closing the road trip at Allegheny Sunday, December 17 at 2 p.m.
