Stachowski's Three Secures Wabash Win at Hiram

Ben Stachowski drained a three-point shot with 21 remaining in Friday night's North Coast Athletic Conference game at Hiram to give the Little Giants a six-point lead and an eventual 70-64 road victory.

Stachowski's three-pointer was his only basket in a six-point effort for the game. Junior Zach Patton hit a pair of free throws in the final 11 seconds to boost the advantage to eight points before Hiram (9-11, 6-7 NCAC) provided the final basket in the closing seconds for the six-point margin for the Little Giants.
This second contest between Wabash (9-11, 5-8 NCAC) and the Terriers was eerily similar to the game at Chadwick Court between the two teams in December. Wabash claimed a six-point win after taking a 20-point lead in the early moments of the second half to hold on for the 58-52 victory. Friday night Wabash posted another large lead, 38-22 at halftime, thanks to 19 points from freshman Colten Garland in the period. Garland finished with 26 points --- including a 6-for-13 effort from three-point range --- to lead the Little Giants in scoring.

While Garland provided the outside punch, sophomore Logan White and freshman Harrison Hallstrom handled the inside scoring. White picked up 16 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. Hallstrom chipped in 11 points and six boards.

The Little Giants expanded the lead to a game high 18 points in late in the first half before Hiram mounted its second-half scoring barrage. The Terriers trimmed the lead to single digits with 5:09 remaining in the contest on a Brevin Dye basket after Wabash had regained the 18-point edge six minutes earlier. Hiram used its speed and pressure on defense to force nine turnovers for 18 points in the final period after Wabash has made only three turnovers in the first half.

Austin Blatt closed the Little Giants' lead to five points on his made free throw with 1:30 left in regulation. Blatt made it a two-point game 21 seconds later, canning a three-pointer after an offensive rebounds by the Terriers. Hiram converted 18 offensive rebounds into 12 points in the come-back effort.

The Little Giant responded with Stachowski's triple to move in front 67-62. Stachowski added one of two free throws with 21 seconds on the game clock before Zach Patton closed out the win with his two free throws with 11 seconds left to play.

Patton, in his third start of the season, provided an additional presence on the boards for Wabash. He hustled after seven offensive boards out of 17 offensive rebounds for the Little Giants leading to 15 second-chance points. Patton finished the game with a season-high nine points and career-best eight rebounds in 28 minutes of action.

Wabash limited Hiram's two leading scorers, Kelvin Jones and Paul Ortiz, to a total of nine points. Jones came into the game averaging 18.4 points a game, but was limited to one basket for two points by the Little Giants. Ortiz scored seven points in 22 minutes, below his 13.5 points-per-game average. Jeremiah Thomas paced the Terriers with 12 points. Dye tallied 11.

The Little Giants are back in action Saturday afternoon at Allegheny as part of the team's longest conference road trip of the season. The Gators earned a 73-59 win over DePauw Friday night. Tipoff Saturday is set for 3 p.m.
