Box Score 2 Wabash split a double-header Friday evening against Lewis & Clark University to close out its 2017 spring break trip to Arizona.
Â
Wabash won the first game 4-2, supported by senior
Jensen Kirch's solid complete game. The Little Giants faltered in the second game 10-4 after a down fifth inning plagued Wabash in the end. Senior Michael Hermann was handed the loss.
Â
Game one was an intense, back-and-forth battle of pitching. Kirch threw all seven innings of game one, and allowed one earned run on eight scattered hits and only walked one batter. The Wabash senior outdueled the Lewis and Clark pitcher down to the wire. Robe Reaser threw 6.2 innings for Lewis & Clark before Wabash broke through offensively in the top of the seventh inning.
Â
Senior
Andrew Roginski got the Little Giants on the board first when he singled to center and drove in both sophomores
Jared Wolfe and
Sean Roginski. In the top of the seventh, the visiting Little Giants put runners on second and third for sophomore
Eric Chavez. Chavez poked a single to center field that drove in both runners and put Wabash in the lead 4-2. Kirch shut the door in the bottom of the inning and sealed the game one victory.
Â
Other Little Giants who tallied hits in game one were Wolfe, Roginski (2B), juniors Zack Leander and
Tyler Downing (2B), and freshman Henry Wannameuhler.
Â
In game two, the Little Giants battled throughout the game, but could not mount a sizeable comeback in the end. Hermann pitched 4.0 innings, gave up five runs on seven hits and walked one while striking out three. It was a rough outing for the Wabash bullpen, which gave up a total of five more runs on five hits and walked three.
Â
The Little Giant offense started strong early in the game. Junior
Cole Harlacher connected on a deep fly ball to right field which the Lewis & Clark right fielder could not handle. Harlacher reached third base and scored junior
Taylor Canter in the process. In the bottom of the third inning, Wabash scored two more runs on a
Sean Roginski triple down the right field line in the bottom of the third inning.
After the Lewis & Clark seven-run fifth inning, Wabash found itself in a hole from which it could not dig out. The Little Giants would scratch across one more run in the sixth inning, but could not produce any more offense.
The Little Giants finished the spring break trip with a 5-2 record, and collected a five-game winning streak in between losses. The Little Giants are back in action March 18
th and 19
th when they host Hanover College (IN) for a three-game series at Goodrich Ballpark in Crawfordsville. First pitch for game one of the double-header on March 18
th is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
