Wabash fell behind 5-0 in the first inning and was unable to recover, losing 12-2 to DePauw to open the two-game home series versus the Tigers in North Coast Athletic Conference West Division play.
DePauw (27-10, 10-3 NCAC West) added a pair of runs in the third inning and another in the fifth before the Little Giants scored two runs in the bottom half of the fifth.
Henry Wannemuehler opened the inning with a double to left center then came home to score the first run for Wabash on a single by
Nick Chao. Chao advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw by Mike Hammel before scoring on a ground out by
Eric Chavez two batters later.
Wabash was limited to four hits by Chavez, Wannemeuhler, Chao, and a double by
Erich Lange.
Jensen Kirch took the loss, pitching three innings and allowing seven earned runs on nine hits and three walks.
Luke Dant surrendered four runs on five hits and three hit batsman in 2-2/3 innings on the mound. He and Kirch each struck out two batters.
Kevin O'Donnell finished the game for the Little Giants (20-14, 5-8 NCAC West), pitching 1-1/3 innings. He gave up one run on three hits with two strikeouts.
The two teams play a single nine-inning game back at Goodrich Ballpark Tuesday to complete the series. First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m.
