Francisco Trejo capped a weekend trip for the Wabash soccer team with a game-winning goal in the closing minute of regulation to defeat Monmouth College 1-0.
Â
The Little Giants picked up a 3-0 victory at Fontbonne University Saturday afternoon thanks to a pair of goals and an assist from Trejo to go with a defensive shutout anchored by freshman goalkeeper
Chad Wunderlich. Wabash repeated the shutout effort Sunday versus Monmouth (0-6), limiting the Scots to one shot on goal and eight total shots in the game.
Â
Trejo's winning goal Sunday came with 40 seconds remaining in regulation. The senior finished with two of the Little Giants' six shots on goal in the contest and currently leads Wabash in goals scored this season with four.
Â
"It was great to get two shutouts in a difficult weekend with two games in the span of 24 hours," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We played well through portions of the game today versus Monmouth, but you could tell that our guys were a little tired from the back-to-back games. We fought together as a team. We kept our composure and found a way to get the ball in the net in the final minute and avoid overtime."
Â
Wunderlich picked up his second shutout in as many days, turning aside the lone shot on goal he faced to improve to 3-0 as a collegiate goalkeeper.
Â
Wabash (4-2) returns to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Anderson University.
