Ball movement and unselfish teamwork provided four goals for the Wabash College team in its 4-1 victory Wednesday evening over Earlham College.
Â
The Little Giants recorded nine shots on goal and dished out seven assists to capture the win in their home opener of the season.
Â
"I was very pleased today with the shot selection," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "We really don't care who puts the ball in the net. We find the guy that's in the best position, and whoever it is, it is. It's been a fun offense to watch. We've played as a team instead of a group of individuals just focused on getting on the score sheet.
Â
"When we win the ball we work on recognizing what is the most dangerous position we can put our teammates in," Keller said. "We look to see who is in the better position instead of creating something on your own. We work to help each other create an opportunity in the final third early. If it's not on, we just keep the ball."
Â
Freshman
Corbin Kaiser started the scoring for the Little Giants when he collected a pass from
Christian Stiverson, firing a shot past the Earlham (0-3) goalkeeper for his first goal of the season. Nine minutes after Kaiser's goal, freshmen
Kyle Holmer notched his first collegiate goal after tremendous passing from
Cesar Martinez and
Justin Kopp, providing a 2-0 halftime lead for Wabash.
Â
Holmer returned the favor in the second period. Holmer sent a pass from
Gabriel Anguiano toward Martinez who found the back of the net to make it a 3-0 Wabash advantage.
Â
Vojislav Tatarevic put a loose ball in front of the Wabash net into the goal to put the Quakers on the board and cut the Little Giants' lead to 3-1.
Â
Kopp entered the game tied for the lead among North Coast Athletic Conference players with two assists. After scoring an assist on Holmer' goal, he added one more in the second half. Kopp passed the ball on the attack to Holmer, who sent it on to
Francisco Trejo. The senior drilled the shot into the right side of the net for his first goal of the season and final tally of the night while also giving Kopp four assists in his first two games.
Â
"
Justin Kopp has been tremendous early," Keller said. "We hope that he continues playing the same way. He know when to release. He knows when to cross, and he's got a great delivery of the ball which we really need from our outside back. He's also a great kid and is really good in the classroom. He's a nice addition to the program."
Â
Wabash outshot the visitors 18-6 including a 10-2 advantage in the second half. Freshman goalkeeper
Demitri Lee made two saves in his first collegiate start.
Â
Wabash (2-0) travels to Hanover College Sunday for a 3 p.m. contest.
