Wabash Rally Falls Short in Home Loss To Wooster

Wabash fell behind 14-0 in the opening four minutes of Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference home game versus the College of Wooster before rallying to lead with two minutes remaining in the game. The Little Giants' efforts fell short in the end, losing to the Fighting Scots 80-72.

Wabash (8-9, 4-6 NCAC) missed its first 11 shots from the field to face a 14-0 deficit before Conner Brens broke the ice for the Little Giants with a layup. Wabash eventually trailed 21-5 before mounting its first big scoring run. The Little Giants scored the next 13 points while holding the Scots (13-4, 7-3 NCAC) scoreless for four minutes to trim the lead to 21-18.

Wooster held a 39-34 lead at the half, holding the lead through the opening four minutes of the second period. Wabash cut into the visitor's advantage until Jack Davidson nailed a three-point shot at the 16:20 mark of the half to put the Little Giants in front 42-40. The lead jumped back and forth over the next three minutes until Wooster regained the lead on a basket from Reece Dupler to put the Scots in front 50-48.

Wooster extended its advantage to 11 points at 61-50 with 9:50 remaining. The Little Giants mounted another rally, beginning with a three-point play from Davidson on a drive to the basket and a free throw. Brens took control in the paint, scoring two more of his season-high 13 points to cut the Wooster lead to six. The Little Giants continued to cut into the Scots' advantage until Brens hit another shot in close and added a free throw to make it a one-point contest at 63-62 with 5:57 left to play.

Wooster answered with back-to-back three-point baskets from Blake Blair and Dupler to move back up by seven. Brens responded with another basket, followed by a Connor Rotterman triple for a 69-67 two-point deficit for the Little Giants. Two free throws from Davidson came after a layup by Dupler to keep Wabash within two.

Davidson brought the Wabash crowd to its feet with a pull-up three-pointer with 2:35 remaining to provide the Little Giants a 72-71 lead. Those would be the final points of the game for Wabash. Wooster tallied the final nine points down the stretch to take the eight-point victory.

Rotterman kept the Little Giants in the game in the first half, coming off the bench to score 17 points in the opening period. He finished with a team-best 20 points. Brens and Davidson each scored 13 points. Alex Eberhard added 10 points.

Dupler paced Wooster with 20 points. Spencer Williams and Trenton Tipton each scored 15 points for the Scots. Dayon Hempy finished with 14 points.
