Wabash lost a North Coast Athletic Conference road soccer contest Saturday evening, falling 2-0 at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Â
The host Battling Bishops (10-2-1, 4-0-1 NCAC) scored an early goal in the 14
th minute off a shot by Adam Yingling that hit the upper-right corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season. Wabash (10-3-1, 3-2-0 NCAC) tried to even the score with a shot on goal by
Jacques Boulais, but the attempt was collected by goalkeeper JP Baughman for his lone save of the match.
Â
OWU added a second goal in the fourth minute of the second half when Charles Branche III redirected a pass inside the right post for his second goal of the year.
Â
Injuries forced the Little Giants into some changes in the starting lineup and in bench rotations throughout the match.
Â
"We had some guys step up that had been coming off the bench earlier this year and played quite a few minutes," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "They stepped up and played well.
Nathan Ooley gave us some great minutes as a starter in the midfield tonight.
Michael Zubeck gave us some great minutes off the bench. We played well in a lot of parts of the game. It was unfortunate to give up an early goal but we bounced back from that and had some chances of our own in the first half to try to equal the score.
Â
"Ohio Wesleyan is the best team we've played in my opinion. We gave them a couple of chances and made a couple of mistakes and they punished us for them. Overall though we played pretty well tonight."
Â
Chad Wunderlich finished the game with nine saves and faced 24 total shot attempts. Wabash fired five shots overall with two by Boulais and two off the foot of
Timothy Herring.
Â
The loss dropped Wabash to fourth place in the conference standings with a total of nine points. The Little Giants travel to Denison for a Wednesday afternoon contest beginning at 4 p.m. The Big Red moved into third place in the NCAC standings with ten points after defeating Wittenberg 4-0 Saturday afternoon.
Â
"We have to take care of some difficult matches from here on out," Keller said. "We've played the two top teams as of now and we're still sitting in one of the top-four spots to earn a berth in the conference tournament. Denison is a difficult team to play and they're ahead of us in the standings right now. Wednesday would be a big win for our team if we can get it heading into Senior Day on Saturday against Oberlin, which is always a very well-coached team. We just have to execute our game plan, get one game at a time, and start adding up those points. We can't take anything for granted. There is still a lot of soccer still to be played."
