Freshmen Lead Wabash To Soccer Victory On Senior Day

On a day that Wabash College soccer fans honored the five senior members of its 2018 team, a pair of freshmen provided the scoring for the Little Giants in a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon.

Timothy Herring scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the final minute of regulation to break a 1-1 tie to give Wabash (11-3-2, 4-2-1 NCAC) an important conference victory. The win, combined with losses by Denison and DePauw, vaulted the Little Giants into third place in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings with two games left on the regular season schedule. The top-four teams in the regular season standings will meet in the conference tournament.

Wabash freshman Joseph Kaefer notched his first goal of the season in 53rd minute of the game to put the Little Giants in front 1-0. Oberlin (1-14-0, 1-6-0 NCAC) answered with a goal from Nic Jandeleit in the 82nd minute to even the score at 1-1 on the only shot on goal for the Yeomen.

With the match appearing to head to overtime, Herring collected the ball with the clock counting down to zero and launched a shot attempt into the back of the net with 20 seconds left to play for the game-winner for Wabash. The Little Giants dominated the offensive numbers in the match, outshooting Oberlin 21-3 with nine shots on goal compared to one for the visiting Yeomen.

Wabash honored senior players Jacques Boulais, Max Lawson, Collin Luckey, and Christian Stiverson along with student assistant coach Scott Bye prior to the start of the match. The seniors helped Wabash to 44 victories over the past four seasons along with two appearances in the NCAC Tournament.

The Little Giants head into the final week of the regular season with a total of 13 points. Kenyon leads the conference race with 19 points with Ohio Wesleyan in second place with 17 points. Denison and DePauw are tied for fourth place with 11 points with Wooster one point back with a total of 10 in sixth place.

Wabash will play host to DePauw Tuesday afternoon in its regular season home finale with the match starting at 4 p.m. at Fischer Field.
