Kaefer's Game-Winner Locks Up 1-0 Win For Wabash Over DePauw

Freshman Joseph Kaefer came up with a loose ball that slipped past DePauw goalkeeper Austin Bodner and deposited it into the back of the net to give the Wabash soccer team a 1-0 victory over the visiting Tigers and put the Little Giants one game closer to earning a berth in next week's North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

Kaefer picked up his second goal of the season in as many games and the first game-winner of his career. Bodner stepped toward the left side of the box to try and corral the ball off a pass from Marco Medina in the 40th minute. Kaefer raced past the sliding Bodner and sent the shot into the back of the net for the lone goal of the match.

DePauw had a scoring opportunity earlier in the contest. A shot by Jack Schrepferman bounced past Little Giant goalkeeper Chad Wunderlich and toward the goal before defender Cristian Aleman raced back and kicked it away to keep the score even at 0-0 at the time. DePauw managed one more shot on goal in the game, but Wunderlich made the save on the attempt to record his ninth complete shutout of the season to tie for the Wabash record for shutouts in a season with nine. Wunderlich matched the mark of nine shutouts set in 2015 by Dayton Jennings.

The victory was the third in a row by the Little Giants over their arch-rival and added an important three points to the Wabash total for the season in conference play. The Little Giants finish the evening with 16 points with one regular season match remaining at Wooster Saturday at noon. The Scots entered the day with 10 total points and play at Allegheny Tuesday night. A loss by Wooster or a loss by Denison Tuesday night at Hiram would secure a trip to the conference tournament for the third consecutive season. Denison entered the evening tied with DePauw in fourth place in the conference standings with 11 points.
