Wabash freshman
Timothy Herring recorded his first collegiate hat trick, scoring all three goals in the Wabash College soccer team's 3-2 win Tuesday night at Wittenberg University.
Herring scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal for Wabash (10-2-1, 3-1-0 NCAC) in the 53rd minute to provide a 3-1 lead for the visiting Little Giants. Wittenberg (6-7-0, 1-3-0 NCAC) added a goal in the 74th minute just prior to both teams playing down a man late in the match after red cards were issued to Alberto Zaragoza and
Marco Medina.
Zaragoza opened the scoring in the match, netting his North Coast Athletic Conference-leading 11th goal of the season in the 31st minute to put the Tigers in front 1-0. Herring answered with an unassisted goal three minutes later to even the score at 1-1. The first-year player added his second goal four minutes after that, collecting a pass from
Christian Stiverson to score is sixth goal of the season for a 2-1 Wabash lead.
Herring made it a three-goal night off a pass from
Cristian Aleman in the 53rd minute for the 3-1 lead. Herring's three goals give him seven for the season, tying him for second place in the NCAC for goals scored. Will Stephens scored the final goal of the match for Wittenberg with Zaragoza picking up the assist.
Wittenberg outshot Wabash 14-11. The Little Giants scored three goals on five shots on goal while the host Tigers finished with seven shots on goal. Wabash goalkeeper
Chad Wunderlich made five saves to earn the victory.
