Late Free Throws Lock Up Wabash Win Over Rose-Hulman

Wabash did not step to the free throw line for the first 36 minutes of its Monday evening home contest against Rose-Hulman, but connected on nine of its ten charity tosses over the final 3:47 of the game to secure a 77-74 victory over the visiting Fightin' Engineers.

The Little Giants remained unbeaten, moving to 3-0 on the young season by battling back in a game that featured 10 ties and 17 lead changes. Wabash tied the game with 11:09 remaining on a three-pointer from Ben Stachowski to even the score at 55-55. Colten Garland hit a jumper less than a minute later to provide a short-lived two-point lead. Rose-Hulman (2-2) answered with a layup from Ryuji Aoki at 9:34 for a 57-57 game before Garland provided the final go-ahead basket for the Little Giants with a jumper in the paint with 9:14 left to play.

Wabash moved in front by as many as seven points before the Engineers trim the advantage to a point at 71-70 in the final minute. Jack Davidson's driving layup fell away from the basket but was tipped out of bounds by Rose, giving the basketball back to Wabash with 29 seconds to play.

Alex Eberhard drew a foul and hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds remaining to boost the Little Giants' lead to 73-70. A layup by Craig McGee was blocked by Harrison Hallstrom at the opposite end of the floor and an ensuing foul sent Eberhard back to the stripe. The junior hit both free throws for a 75-70 Wabash lead with 14 seconds on the clock.

McGee answered with a fast-break layup to cut the lead to 75-72 with eight seconds left to play, then scored again after a Wabash turnover to make it a one-point game with four seconds showing on the clock. Davidson took the inbound pass and drew a foul on a double team. His two free throw tosses were good to provide the final three-point victory for Wabash.

Davidson finished the game with 20 points, his third 20-point effort of the season. Eberhard added 14 points, while Garland chipped in 11 to move past the 600-point mark in his career with 607 points in 53 games. Charlie Aimone scored 19 points to lead Rose-Hulman in scoring.

Wabash was outrebounded for the first time this season by an opponent, losing the battle of the boards 40-35. Hallstrom grabbed eight caroms to lead the way for the Little Giants.

Wabash continues its three-game home stand for the week with a Wednesday evening contest against Elmhurst College. Tipoff at Chadwick Court is set for 7 p.m.
