The Wabash wrestling team opened its 2018-19 season Saturday in Adrian, Michigan, winning the Adrian Invitational by one point over the University of Mount Union. The Little Giants scored two individual weight class titles and 20 top-eight finishes at the tournament.
 
While the Little Giants were competing at Adrian, Darden Schurg posted four victories to win the 174-pound weight class title at the Michigan State Open to begin his season. Schurg started the day with a 4-3 victory over Jairod James from Mount Union, the 2018 NCAA Division III champion at 174 pounds. Schurg followed with a technical fall at 21-4 against Anthony Mantanona in the semifinals before scoring an 8-6 win in the championship bout against Brit Wilson from Northern Illinois.
 
Sophomores Jared Timberman and Maxwell Bishop each captured individual titles at the Adrian Invitational Timberman rolled through the 165-pound bracket with a perfect 4-0 record to win the individual weight class title. He started the day with a pin 1:35 into his first match, then picked up 7-0 and 4-0 decisions to advance to the title bout. Timberman defeated Michael McIntire from Mount Union 5-1 to earn the first-place finish and 22 team points.
 
Bishop started the day with a 5-3 decision in his first 285-pound match, then scored back-to-back falls before beating Luca Santillo from John Carroll by a 9-1 major decision to claim the weight class title.
 
Wabash finished with 170 points to finish ahead of Mount Union with 169 in the team scoring. John Carroll placed ten points back in third place with a score of 159.
 
Kody Wagner posted a 5-1 record for the day at 149 pounds, placing third overall. The freshman scored a win in his first collegiate bout, followed by two more victories before dropping to the consolation bracket. Wagner closed out the tournament with back-to-back victories for the third-place finish and 15-1/2 team points for Wabash.
 
Cade Girgenti finished 4-1 at 174 pounds to place third and pick up 19-1/2 points for the Little Giants. He scored three pins, including one 4:13 into the third-place championship match over Conner Homan from Mount Union to help Wabash earn the team title. Ethan Herrin added a third-place finish at 20 team points at 184 pounds with his 5-1 record on the day. He scored a pair of falls after dropping to the consolation bracket and added another pin at the 45-second mark of the title bout against Devon Pingel from Adrian.
 
Chris Diaz placed fourth at 125 pounds, opening with a pair of victories in the opening rounds and pin in the consolation semifinals to finish 3-2 for the day. Diaz added 15-1/2 points to the Wabash scoring with his efforts on the day. Riley Lomenick earned three victories at 141 pounds to place fourth overall and pick up 12-1/2 points for the Little Giants in the team scoring.
 
Alex Barr added a fourth-place finish and 20.5 points wrestling at 157 pounds. The freshman finished 5-2 for the tournament with four pins, including falls in his first two matches. Malik Hoover added a third-place finish as a non-scoring competitor at 157 pounds with five overall victories. Hoover lost his opening match before marching through the consolation bracket to finish third overall.
 
Levi Miller scored 13 team points with a fourth-place finish at 197 pounds. He earned four consecutive wins, including a pin, in the consolation bracket to finish 4-2 for the tournament. Will Amberger place sixth overall at 197 pounds with two victories in the tournament.
 
Jacob Obst scored three consecutive pins to begin his Wabash wrestling career on the way to a 5-1 record for the tournament and a third-place finish at 285 pounds. Wade Ripple finished the tournament with a 5-2 record to place fourth in the 285-pound weight class. James Lewis won three matches to finish fifth in the heavyweight division.
 
Maddox Lee finished 4-3 on the day at 149 pounds to finish sixth overall. Chris Wilson earned three victories to finish seventh at 197 pounds, while Sam Hansen picked up a pair of wins to finish eighth in the weight class.
 
Rodney Hendricks picked up a pair of victories, including a pin in his first collegiate match, to place eighth at 133 pounds. Jacob Stephenson earned four consecutive wins in the 149-pound weight class to finish eighth overall. Anthony Cicciarelli went 4-3 at 165 pounds to finish eighth.
 
Wabash will travel to Manchester University Friday evening to compete in its first dual meet of the season.
