Wabash battled a pair of nationally-ranked wrestling programs at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Quad Tournament, finishing the day with a 2-1 overall record.

The fifth-ranked Little Giants knocked off the host WPI squad, listed 20
th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III team rankings, by a score of 32-9. Wabash faced off against third-ranked Johnson and Wales in the next round in a 20-17 loss by Wabash. The Little Giants closed out their Boston trip with a a dominating 43-3 victory against Castleton University.

Wabash jumped out to a fast start against WPI in the opening match with
Sunny Nier scoring a 16-0 technical fall at 125 pounds.
Riley Lomenick added four more points to the Little Giants' team total with a 10-1 major decision in his 133-pound weight class bout against Andrew Ellis.
Owen Doster defeated Zach Harris 18-1 at 141 pounds for a technical fall victory to increase the Little Giants' lead to 14-0.

Griffin Schermer scored an 8-3 victory in his 149-pound bout before
Kyle Hatch recorded the first pin of the match at 165 pounds. Hatch earned a fall at the 1:58 mark of his bout after WPI picked up its first team points with a victory in the 157-pound bout to make the score 23-3 in favor of Wabash.

Darden Schurg added another pin for the Little Giants 37 seconds into his 174-pound weight class match. WPI picked up victories in the next two matches before
Wade Ripple closed out the morning session with an 8-3 victory at heavyweight to provide the 32-9 win for Wabash.

The Little Giants trailed Johnson and Wales early in the second match of the tournament after the third-ranked Wildcats recorded a pin in the 125-pound bout. Lomenick got three points back for Wabash with a 7-3 win at 133 pounds versus Bobby Jordan. The Wildcats scored wins in the next two matches before
Jared Timberman ended the streak with an 11-2 major decision at 157 pounds to cut the Johnson and Wales lead to 13-7. Hatch scored a 6-5 victory in his 165-pound bout. Schurg gave Wabash a 14-13 lead with a major decision (13-3) over Michael Gargano at 174 pounds.

The Wildcats rallied for victories in the next two matches before
Maxwell Bishop got Wabash to within three points in the final match with a 6-1 victory at heavyweight with Johnson and Wales holding on for the 20-17 victory.

Wabash had no problem with unranked Castleton in the final team showdown of the tournament. The Little Giants won nine of the ten dual bouts, including pins by Schermer, Hatch, Schurg, and
Ethan Herrin. Nier scored a tech fall (16-0) as did Timberman (20-3). Lomenick,
Levi Miller, and Bishop each scored three points for the Little Giants to provide the 43-3 win to close out the day.

While part of the Wabash team competed out east at WPI, the rest of the squad participated in the North Central College Invitational, finishing ninth out of 14 teams.

Malik Hoover finished fourth at 157 pounds by winning a pair of early matches in the weight class with a 9-1 major decision over Jack Rathburn from the Milwaukee School of Engineering and a 9-3 victory versus Vince Liebich from North Central.

Daylan Schurg started his day with a pin of Nick Fetzner from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in their opening 165-pound weight class bout. Schurg added a 6-0 win over Marcello Macellaio from North Central after dropping into the consolation bracket of the weight class. He followed that victory with a 7-4 decision over Fetzner in a rematch in the consolation semifinals to eventually finish sixth overall after a loss in the finals.

Sam Russell earned two victories with a tech fall (19-4) versus Ben Black from Wheaton and an 11-7 win against Isaiah Williams from Dubuque on the way to an eighth-place finish at 141 pounds.

Samuel Hansen placed eighth at 197 pounds. He pinned Triston Richardson from Augustana at 4:19 in the first match of the bracket, then added a 7-4 decision over teammate
James Lewis in the consolation portion of the bracket.

Jacob Obst also scored an eighth-place finish at heavyweight. He pinned Dalton Miller from Alma at 3:48 in their first match of the day. Obst defeated Donald Moses III by a 10-0 major decision in the consolation fourth round to earn his eighth-place finish.

Wabash finished with a total of 51.5 points for the tournament. North Central won the team portion of the tournament with a total of 163 points. Olivet placed second with 118.5 points, followed by Concordia College in third place with 109 points.

Wabash will compete at the University of Chicago Duals December 29 to close out the 2018 portion of the season.
