Little Giants Battle Flying Dutchmen, Weather In Saturday Home Loss

Wabash picked up goals from Andrew Weiland, Jake Taylor, and Collin Brennan Saturday afternoon as the Little Giants battled both the lacrosse team from Hope College and the weather conditions in a 16-4 loss at home.

A concentrated band of winter weather dumped snow onto Fischer Field hours prior to the start of the match. After clearing the field for play the visiting Flying Dutchman (6-1) struck immediately. Hope scored six goals in the first period, then added another in the first five minutes of the second period to take a 7-0 lead.

Wabash (2-6) scored its first goal with less than two minutes remaining in the opening half. Weiland took a pass from Brenan and fired home his first goal of the season for a 7-1 score.

Hope made another offensive push in the third period with eight goals to provide a 15-1 lead for the visitors. Taylor fired home a goal in the last three minutes of the period for a 15-2 deficit entering the final 15 minutes of action.

Decreasing visibility and an increasing blanket of snow accumulated on the field, forcing more turnovers than shot attempts in the final period. Wabash picked up a pair of goals on six shots in the fourth. The first came when Weiland took a pass from Taylor to score his second goal of the contest early in the period. Brennan scored his goal four minutes later, collecting a pass from AJ Shaheen to net his 18th goal of the season.

Wabash finished with 14 shot attempts compared to 47 for Hope. Max Atkins made 11 saves in goal for the Little Giants. He also scooped up a team-best 11 ground balls. Aaron Elsing forced five turnovers defensively.

Wabash travels to Michigan next weekend to play Calvin College March 31 at 1 p.m.
