Wabash Offense Struggles In 6-5 Loss at Rose-Hulman

Wabash manufactured five runs on four hits Wednesday at Rose-Hulman only to watch the Fightin' Engineers secure a 6-5 win with a solo home run in the seventh inning.

The Little Giants led most of the game. Wabash (13-4) scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning on an RBI single to left by Tyler Downing to scored Andrew Jumonville, who led off the frame with a walk. Jared Wolfe extended the inning when he was hit by pitch --- one of three times the junior drew a base by being hit by the ball. Sean Roginski followed with a two-run double to right-center field to extend his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 15 while providing a 3-0 lead for the Little Giants.

Rose (5-12) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of back-to-back doubles along with an RBI ground out to the right side.

Wabash loaded the bases in the sixth inning on two walks and a bunt single by Downing, who picked up two of the Little Giants' four base hits. Wolfe was hit by another pitch to drive in the fourth run of the game, extending the lead to 4-2. Roginski brought another run home for his third RBI of the game when he was hit by a pitch to make it 5-2.

Rose-Hulman rallied again in the bottom half of the inning. The Engineers opened the inning with a double, a walk, and an RBI single. A sacrifice bunt and another ground out to the left side of the infield brought a run home to make the score 5-4. Rose tied it one batter later on a run-scoring single by Conner Shipley.

The home team took its only lead of the game in the seventh when Conner Helbling lifted a solo home run to left field. Wabash was unable to produce a base runner in the final two innings to end the ball game.

The Little Giants used the mid-week contest to give its pitching staff an opportunity to face hitters in live game situations. Eight different players took to the mound for Wabash. Ryan Thomas was charged with the loss, pitching 1-1/3 innings. He struck out three batters with his only hit allowed the home run by Helbling. The rest of the staff scattered 13 hits over 6-2/3 innings to go with three strikeouts and two walks. Kase Lawson surrendered three runs on four hits with one walk. Kurt Lange gave up a pair of runs on three hits. Eric Murphy and Erich Lange each gave up two hits. Kevin O'Donnell and starter Sean Smith each limited Rose to one hit apiece. Tyler Cooper retired all three batters he faced in the third inning.

Wabash opens North Coast Athletic Conference play Saturday at home against Allegheny College  beginning at noon.
