Little Giants Split Baseball Doubleheader In Conference Opener Against Allegheny

Wabash Baseball finished 1-1 against the Allegheny College Gators in a Saturday afternoon North Coast Athletic Conference double header at Goodrich Ballpark. Wabash took the first game with a 5-0 win, and Allegheny responded with a 9-8 win in the second contest.

The Little Giants (14-5, 1-1 NCAC) faced an early scare in game one when Allegheny (5-11, 1-1 NCAC) loaded bases in the top of the first inning. Luckily, they could not capitalize as Wabash was able to turn a double play to end the Gators' threat.

From that point, it was lights out play by the entire Little Giant squad.  In the bottom of the second, Jared Wolfe hit a single and advanced to second on an errant throw to bring home Canton Terry and Andrew Jumonville for the games first two runs. In the following at bat, Sean Roginski drove in Eric Chavez to end the second inning with a 3-0 score.

After three quick outs for Allegheny, Wabash went back to work offensively with Jumonville hitting a single, batting in Matthew Annee to take the score to 4-0. The story was the same for the fourth inning, as Wabash's defense recorded three quick outs before Roginski singled to centerfield, bringing in Tyler Downing for the fifth and final run of the game.

Wabash leaned on its defense and the strong pitching efforts of senior starter Bryan Roberts. Roberts pitched all nine innings, recording a shutout in his first complete game of the season. He finished with five strikeouts and surrendered three hits and improved his season ERA to 1.05 and moved to 5-0 record overall.

The pitching for the Little Giants had a different story in the second game. Cody Cochran started the game, and was ultimately credited with the loss, giving up four runs in the 2/3 of an inning before being relieved by Kevin O'Donnell. O'Donnell was replaced by Erich Lange in the second inning before turning over the pitching duties to his younger brother Kurt Lange, who started out the third inning. Tyler Cooper came on in relief of Kurt Lange in the seventh before Zach Moffett took over in the eighth. Combined the six man pitching staff gave up 16 hits and nine runs.

With the pitching woes, the Little Giants found themselves down 7-3 by the end of the second inning. The three run were scored by Wabash in the bottom of the first. Bryce Aldridge nearly hit a home run with a drive that bounced off the top of the left centerfield fence, landing in the ballpark. The play resulted in a double for Aldridge and brought Jared Wolfe in for a score. Matthew Annee then hit a single that allowed Jackson Blevins to run in for a score. Andrew Jumomville hit a single of his own, batting in Aldridge with the final run of the inning.

The scored remained 7-3 in favor of Allegheny, from the second inning until the top of the fifth when the Gators scored a run on a sacrifice fly ball to outfield. However, Wabash answered with a four-run fifth inning to cut into the Gators' lead. The first score came when Sean Roginski was walked with loaded bases to extend his consecutive games reaching base streak to 17 games and allowing Jumonville to score. Blevins followed with a single to bring home Tyler Downing and Eric Chavez with two more runs. Aldridge drove in the final run of the inning with his single that allowed Roginski to score.

Allegheny scored a run in the seventh inning to extend their lead but Wabash answered in the eighth inning with a single from Chavez that brought Jumonville in for a score, bringing the game score to 9-8 in the Gators' favor going into the ninth inning.  Wabash picked up a base runner in the bottom of the ninth to put the tying run on base and the winning run at the plate. The Little Giants were unable to complete the final rally, losing by a run to split the series.

The Little Giants finished the day with 26 hits combined over the two games (9 in game one, 17 in game two). They return to action on Wednesday April 4th, when they take on Wittenberg at home in a double header. The first game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
