Wabash Pounds Wheaton 15-4

The Wabash offense pounded out 15 runs and 12 hits to run-rule Wheaton College 15-4 Monday in Tucson, Arizona.

Cody Cochran earned his first win of the season, pitching six innings and striking out nine Wheaton (2-3) players to set a new career high mark. Cochran scattered six hits and allowed two earned runs with two walks and one hit batsman. Sean Smith closed the final inning, retiring all three batters he faced in the seventh, striking out along with two groundouts.

The Little Giants (4-2) scored early and often, notching two or more runs in each of the first five innings. Wabash took a 2-0 lead in the first when Jackson Blevins tripled to left center to score Sean Roginski. Bryce Aldridge followed with a double to left center to score Blevins.

Wabash added two more runs in the second when Roginski's ground ball to short brought home Andrew Jumonville. Tyler Downing raced from second to third, then ran home when the throw the first on the attempted double play proved errant. Blevins drove Roginski home with another extra-base hit, a double to right-center.

Wheaton cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the third to make it a 5-2 contest, but the Little Giants tallied five more runs in the third inning. Henry Wannemuehler singled over the head of the shortstop to bring Eric Chavez home. The throw back to the infield missed the cutoff, allowing Jumonville to go to third. The Thunder tried to throw out Jumonville, but the attempt went back into the outfield, sending him home with another run. After Dowing was hit by a pitch, Jared Wolfe tripled to bring home two more runs. Blevins add another RBI with a groundout to short to score Wolfe to push the lead to 10-2.

Chavez provided another run in the fourth inning, drawing a walk prior to a double by Jumonville. An error on a ground ball to short brought Jumonville home for a 12-4 lead for Wabash.

Blevins picked up his fourth and fifth RBI of the day with another double to bring home Roginski and Wolfe in the fifth inning. Jumonville opened the sixth inning with a double and scored on pinch-hitter Joey Martoccio's sacrifice fly for the final run of the game.

Blevins and Jumonville each picked up three hits. Jumonville scored a team-high four runs while Roginski scored three times. Wolfe had two hits and two RBI.

Wabash plays Bethany Lutheran at 5 p.m. (EST) on Tuesday.
