Little Giants Drop Doubleheader Against Third-Ranked Wooster

The Wabash baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader against third-ranked Wooster in a key North Coast Athletic Conference series between two of the top teams in the conference. The Fighting Scots took game one 9-4 before scoring a 9-1 victory in game two.

The first contest pitted two the conference's top pitchers. Senior Bryan Roberts entered the game with a 6-0 record for Wabash (18-8, 5-3 NCAC) and the lowest earned run average in the NCAC. Wooster's Nanak Saran stood at 4-1 as the Scots' starter. The two dueled over four innings with Wabash holding a 3-2 lead. Wooster (19-3, 8-0 NCAC) scored two runs in the first inning before the Little Giants struck for an unearned run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Bryce Aldridge.

Wabash tacked on two more runs in the third inning. Sean Roginski hit a one-out single, followed by a single by Jackson Blevins. Aldridge drilled a double to left center to bring the pair home for the 3-2 Wabash lead.

Wooster's potent offense struck for six runs in the fifth inning. Roberts retired the first two Wooster batters before the Scots collected three hits to go with two walks and one wild pitch to drive the Wabash senior starter from the game. Roberts pitched 4-2/3 innings in his first loss of the season, giving up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and four walks. He struck out two batters. Eric Murphy pitched the final 1/3 of an inning, giving up a run on two hits with the Scots taking a 8-3 lead.

Wabash picked up a run in the sixth on back-to-back walks by Tyler Downing and Eric Chavez. A wild pitch by reliever Max Lackner set up a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jared Wolfe to make the score 8-4. Wooster tacked on another run in the seventh off reliever Tyler Cooper, who pitch four innings and limited Wooster to three hits and one walk while striking out one.

The Little Giants collected seven hits and ten walks, but stranded 14 base runners in the game. Aldridge led the team with two hits and three RBI.

Wabash managed just two hits in game two in its 9-1 loss. Blevins reached on a single to left in the fourth inning before Andrew Jumonville drove in the only run of the game for the Little Giants with a double to left center after Aldridge was hit by a pitch and stole second with one out in the inning.

Wooster pounded out 15 hits, including two home runs, to hand Cody Cochran his second loss of the season. Cochran pitched six innings, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on ten hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Kevin O'Donnell worked a near perfect seventh inning, retiring all three Wooster batters on a total of seven pitches with one strikeout. Zach Moffett game up two runs on four hits in one inning of relief with one strikeout. Eric Lakomek pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing only one hit.

Wabash moves to its next NCAC series on Tuesday when the Little Giants play host to Ohio Wesleyan. The first pitch of game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
